Modi-Bill Gates meeting: Idea of a green gross domestic product discussed
Narendra Modi, at his widely-reported meeting with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, broached the idea of green gross domestic product parameters, saying that the tools currently used to quantify economic growth are bad for the climate. Modi also said that climate action has picked up pace since the G20 Summit in India, held in September 2023. When asked about making green solutions more affordable, Modi stressed on the importance of a dual strategy: promoting nature- and climate-friendly innovation, and encouraging environmentally conscious lifestyles. He underlined the need to shift the current perspective on progress, noting that traditional markers like steel consumption and energy use can lead to increased carbon emissions.

In a photo obtained by the Financial Times, guests can be seen milling around a male and female model wearing swimming costume-type clothing and lying on a table with boards stacked with sushi on their stomachs. The event took place in a private dining room at the Mandrake Hotel after the Digital Asset Summit in London earlier this year. An invitation to the after-party said: "Transcend the ordinary at the Copper experience," adding that "attendees will be able to entertain and explore all five senses". A Copper spokesperson told the FT the party "was organised by a third-party event planner and open to all delegates as part of the conference". Hammond, who did not attend the event, became Copper's chairman in January 2023.

View: India’s ‘no’ at WTO may just mean ‘not yet’
trade ministers gather at the World Trade Organization summit in Abu Dhabi this week, one of the villains will, as usual, be India. And, certainly, there’s some justice to the complaint that Indian negotiators are far too ready to block consensus at such confabs unless granted concessions on their own priorities. Saying “no” often comes too easily to them. But those priorities need to be viewed in the context of India’s fiendishly complicated domestic politics. This is a country the size of a continent, and achieving internal consensus on a drastic shift in policy is as hard — or harder — than getting agreement at the WTO. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest, and most popular, leader India has had in decades. But he has always been particularly careful not to provoke widespread protests against his decisions. Although he hates to retract policies after investing political capital in them, he has twice in the past decade withdrawn legislation that enraged some of India’s farmers — a law early on in his tenure that would have made it easier to acquire agricultural land for industry, and a package of reforms in 2021 meant to liberalize India’s complicated farm subsidy system.
