Taste of identity: From Goan amaranth to Malabar spinach, 6 vegetables that became cultural symbols
Red amaranth seems an unlikely political symbol. It is more purple than revolutionary red. Its tiny edible seeds are consumed during religious fasts, but it is mainly grown for its leaves which are cooked like spinach.

COP28: India silent on fossil fuels phase-down despite green push
Sharm El-Sheikh, India has been silent on the question on phasing out or down of fossil fuels at COP28. Despite its aggressive renewable energy targets and its role in the adoption of the G20 commitment to triple renewable energy capacity, India has so far maintained a studied silence on the issue of fossil fuels at the ongoing UN Climate Conference in Dubai. At COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh last year, India had proposed inclusion of clear language on phasing down all fossil fuels, not just coal, as agreed at the Glasgow meet. Though the proposal failed to make the final cut, it gained the support of at least 80 countries and the European Union. This tentative alliance between India, the EU, and small island states was viewed by some observers as a new approach that was ambitious while being rooted in equity. The proposal had not found support from India's traditional negotiating partners such as China and Saudi Arabia. Now, at Friday's plenary marking the start of the second week of negotiations in Dubai, India did not address the issue in its intervention. Instead, it extended support for the position taken by the 43-member Like-minded Developing Countries (LMDC) group that includes China, Saudi Arabia, Bolivia, and Egypt, among others.

Israel ramps up strikes; UNSC delays ceasefire vote
Gaza, giving Arab leaders more time to try to persuade the US to let it pass. Top diplomats from countries including Egypt, Qatar and Jordan were set to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington later Friday amid a push for the US to abstain from voting. Given the US's status as a veto-wielding permanent member of the council, a no vote would kill the resolution.

Israeli negotiators leave Qatar as truce talks break down
Mossad agents negotiating the potential renewal of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas left Qatar on Saturday due to an impasse in the talks. «Due to the impasse in negotiations and following instructions from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mossad chief David Barnea ordered his team in Doha to return to Israel,» the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Saturday night. «The Hamas terror group did not fulfill its obligations under the agreement, including releasing all the women and children in accordance with a list provided to Hamas and approved by it,» the statement added. "[Barnea] thanks the head of the CIA, Egypt's intelligence minister and the prime minister of Qatar for their partnership in the tremendous mediation efforts that led to the release of 84 women and children from Gaza, in addition to 24 foreign nationals," it noted. The IDF resumed combat operations in Gaza on Friday morning after Hamas broke a week-long ceasefire by firing rockets at the Jewish state. Barnea has repeatedly flown to Doha to hold discussions aimed at securing the release of additional hostages held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Amid renewed fighting, Israel's government said it remains committed to seeing that all the hostages return home. According to the latest numbers, 137 remain in captivity. Of those, 20 are women and 117 are men.
