Digital Manufacturing Mobile economy Enterprise country cover Many countries want to replicate India’s digital public infra model: Telecom tycoons
Akash Ambani, chairman, Reliance Jio, Sunil Mittal, chairman, Bharti Enterprises, and Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman, Aditya Birla Group (the co-parent of Vodafone Idea), also told delegates at Asia’s biggest technology event, the India Mobile Congress, that they will double down on investments to ensure broader rollout of 5G in the country. “Country after country as well as World Bank, United Nations, WTO, the Africa Union, the EU, G20, BRICS – everyone is chanting that the digital infrastructure model that India has built can accelerate the world economy, especially in those countries which have lack of infrastructure,” Mittal said. Echoing the sentiment, Jio’s Ambani said using the latest technology can improve the lives of people and the best example of it is India’s digital public infrastructure, purpose-built on an integrated technology backbone that helps the state achieve its stated objective of financial inclusion for the underprivileged. “Millions of youngsters like me are inspired by your work in making Digital India a means to build a more innovative, inclusive and sustainable world,” Ambani said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at the inauguration of India Mobile Congress, Ambani and Mittal also underlined their readiness to offer broadband-from-space services. Kumar Mangalam Birla, additional director of Vodafone Idea, added that India has emerged as a champion of the global south, with many countries from the global south now eager to adopt “India’s path breaking digital public infrastructure assets across identity, payments, and data management.” Mittal also highlighted the success India has achieved in manufacturing in the last few years with players ranging from Apple to

Provident FIVE Waters Fighting President show SOLIDARITY EU calls for 'corridors and pauses' for Gaza aid
Hamas to get aid into Gaza, after hours of negotiations at a summit of the bloc in Brussels. The European Union has struggled for both unity and influence in the face of the crisis that has engulfed the Middle East since Hamas launched its bloody attack on Israel on October 7. The surge in bloodshed has divided Europe's attention at a time of rising doubts about the West's ability to keep supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. After five hours of talks, the leaders called for «continued, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access and aid to reach those in need through all necessary measures including humanitarian corridors and pauses for humanitarian needs». They said the EU «will work closely with partners in the region to protect civilians, provide assistance and facilitate access to food, water, medical care, fuel and shelter». European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insisted early on Friday there was «no contradiction between showing solidarity to Israel and, of course, acting on the need of humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza» after the leaders' talks ended. The 27-nation bloc has long been split between more pro-Palestinian members such as Ireland and Spain, and staunch backers of Israel including Germany and Austria. There has been strong condemnation of the Hamas attack, which Israel says killed at least 1,400 people and resulted in more than 220 people being taken hostage. But there was less consensus on urging any halt to Israel's retaliatory bombardment of Gaza, which the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed more than 7,000 people. The EU's call fell short of the demands from the United Nations for a «ceasefire», despite a last-ditch push from Spain to toughen the

Digital economy Experts country reports US to withdraw key proposal on digital trade
Washington has decided to withdraw its proposal on digital trade at the global trade body to retain the policy space to regulate Big Tech firms. The changed position is crucial ahead of a key ministerial meeting of the WTO next year for which digital trade has been identified as one of the «solid deliverables» by senior trade officials of 164-member countries on Tuesday. The WTO e-commerce negotiations, through a Joint Statement Initiative (JSI), began in 2019 with 90 members trying to reach a consensus on data flows, data localisation, and protection of source code by MC13. India has opposed the plurilateral initiative and has kept away from the talks. New Delhi backs flexibility in digital policy and has concerns about the potential dominance of a handful of e-commerce players. India has also expressed apprehensions over the proposed rules favouring foreign companies, especially the Big Tech. «The new US stand on digital trade validates India's approach on the subject.
