Putin: Western policy mistakes are main reason for high food prices
Vladimir Putin on Friday rejected suggestions that Russia's «special military operation» in Ukraine was responsible for high global food prices, saying Western «mistakes» in the form of monetary stimulus were at the root of the problem.Putin asserted at the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg that the United States and the European Union had printed money to buy food as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that «prices skyrocketed». Putin appeared to be referring to the policy of «quantitative easing» to help major Western economies function under the social and economic disruption of the pandemic.

Microsoft Faces European Antitrust Investigation Over Bundling of Teams Software
The European Union opened an antitrust investigation into whether Microsoft is abusing its dominant position by bundling its Teams videoconferencing app with its popular Office productivity software, marking the first formal EU probe of the software giant in more than a decade. The bloc’s executive body, the European Commission, said it is concerned that Microsoft may be giving Teams an unfair advantage by not allowing customers to choose whether access to the product is included when they subscribe to the company’s productivity software.

Ports expected to overcome headwinds with 4-5% volume growth in FY24: Ind-Ra
New Delhi: Despite challenges posed by economic slowdown in importing markets like the EU and the US, Indian ports are anticipated to achieve mid-single digit volume growth on an aggregate basis in the financial year 2023-24, according to India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). The resilience of Indian ports stems from enhanced operational efficiency, the government’s emphasis on developing downstream logistics infrastructure, and stability in freight rates, enabling them to offset potential lower volumes and achieve a 4%-5% year-on-year volume growth in FY24 (with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5% during FY15-FY23).

UK pushes for bottling of whisky in third country
MUMBAI : British officials negotiating a free trade agreement (FTA) are advocating bottling their whisky ‘in transit’ in a third country for reasons related to cost, logistics, and ‘premium-ness’ of the products, a person aware of the development said. Negotiations on alcoholic beverages assume significance as India considers opening its vast market to countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, and the European Union (EU) under the FTA route. India emerged as the world’s largest consumer of scotch whisky—a key UK export—last year.

India readies for talks with EU on refurbished items
Brussels has insisted that such items should be treated at par with new ones and be eligible for tariff concessions, while New Delhi has concerns it will lead to dumping of e-waste and impact India's domestic manufacturing. Remanufactured goods are those which have undergone transformation through recovery processes such as cleaning and testing to meet the same specifications as a new good. People privy to the development said there is also a view that import of plastic waste should be discouraged as India already has enough plastic that can be recycled.
