GAIL’s tie-up with LanzaTech for CO2 capture is a big deal
On July 19, India’s premier natural gas company GAIL entered into a joint venture with Nasdaq-listed LanzaTech to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and convert it into useful organic chemicals. This must be recognised as a paradigm-setting initiative to combat climate change. So far, the global discourse on combating climate change has been about reducing additional emissions of heat-trapping gases such as CO2, called greenhouse gases, rather than on taking out what has already been injected into the atmosphere.

Hopeful of finalising certain FTAs in next few months, says Piyush Goyal
Piyush Goyal on Saturday said he is hopeful of India finalising certain free trade agreements (FTAs) in the next few months, which would help promote exports. India is in the final stages of concluding FTA negotiations with the UK. The country is also negotiating similar pacts with Canada and European Union (EU). «We can leverage the free trade agreements with the UAE and Australia and we are hopeful that in the next few months, we will finalise many more free trade agreements to help you grow your business with zero duty on finished leather products and footwear available for you to exploit bigger and better markets,» Goyal said while addressing footwear industry representatives here. The minister also asked the industry to focus on quality and sustainable manufacturing processes to tap business opportunities in the developed world. The Indian footwear and leather industry is not only a major foreign exchange earner but being a labour-intensive sector, it also provides employment to approximately 4.5 million people, 40 per cent of whom are women. He said that India has the capacity to become the world's largest and best-quality footwear manufacturer.

Feeling the heat? Scientists reveal July to be the hottest month on record
The World Meteorological Organization and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service on Thursday proclaimed July's heat is beyond record-smashing. They said Earth's temperature has been temporarily passing over a key warming threshold: the internationally accepted goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperatures were 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times for a record 16 days this month, but the Paris climate accord aims to keep the 20- or 30-year global temperature average to 1.5 degrees. A few days of temporarily beating that threshold have happened before, but never in July. July has been so off-the-charts hot with heat waves blistering three continents — North America, Europe and Asia — that researchers said a record was inevitable. The U.S. Southwest's all-month heat wave is showing no signs of stopping while also pushing into most of the Midwest and East with more than 128 million Americans under some kind of heat advisory Thursday. «Unless an ice age were to appear all of sudden out of nothing, it is basically virtually certain we will break the record for the warmest July on record and the warmest month on record,» Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo told The Associated Press.

India, UK to discuss IPR issues in Aug trade talks
Mint had reported that India may not budge from its opposition to the provisions on regulatory data protection as well as patent extension during the free trade talks with the EU and UK. Regulatory data protection or data exclusivity have been among EU’s demands since 2013 but continues to be a red line for India. Patent term extension allows secondary patenting or ‘evergreening’, a technique used by companies to prevent the entry of generic drugmakers.

Next round of India-UK talks in August; IPR, rules of origin, BIT to be taken up
New Delhi: As India and UK inch closer to signing a free trade agreement, both countries are set to take up contentious parts of the FTAs such as Intellectual property rights (IPR), rules of origin, Bilateral Investment Treaties (BIT) during the next round of talks in August, senior government official said on Friday. - Talks on IPR are crucial as India is the world’s largest provider of generic drugs, accounting for a fifth of global supply. The low cost of generics mean they comprise about 70-80% of the domestic retail market and are crucial to the well-being of the aging Indian population.
