How Telegram became a hunting ground for criminals—and cops
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. When federal agent Chris Janczewski was trying to strangle the flow of money to an al Qaeda network in 2020, he first considered infiltrating an invite-only forum or hunting for clues on the dark web. Then the Internal Revenue Service criminal investigator found the group talking openly about its scheme in a public forum on Telegram—one of the thousands of channels where people discuss illicit activities ranging from peddling child porn to selling stolen identities.

How an Iranian spy’s intel uncovered Hezbollah leader’s location just before Israel’s strategic airstrike
Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an airstrike in Beirut. Reports indicate that an Iranian mole provided Israeli authorities with critical information about his whereabouts just hours before the attack. According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the mole informed Israeli officials that Nasrallah was at Hezbollah's underground headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs for a meeting with top members of the organization. Around 1.30 pm IST yesterday (11 am Lebanon time), Israel Defence Forces said in a post on X, «Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.» Later in the day, Hezbollah confirmed the news. «Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah… has joined his great, immortal martyr comrades whom he led for about 30 years,» it said in a statement. The recent airstrike is part of Israel's ongoing campaign against Hezbollah, which has been bolstered by significant intelligence efforts. A report from The New York Times highlights that Israel has devoted increased resources to gather intelligence on Hezbollah since the 2006 war, a conflict that ended without a decisive Israeli victory.

In a perfect punk world, where the Dead Kennedys are bigger than the Beatles, the announcement that Green Day is joining forces with Keurig Dr Pepper would be met with howls. The beverage behemoth recently released a “limited-edition brewer and coffee kit" to mark the 20th anniversary of “American Idiot," Green Day’s “punk rock opera," which skewered America’s post-9/11 jingoism and corporate greed.

Studying the openings and closings of NYC's elite restaurants, Sands found that 'receiving a Michelin star corresponded to an increased likelihood of restaurant exit' — more than 40% of these haute cuisineholes awarded an M-star in 2005-14 shut shop by end-2019.

US and allies call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah
France and other allies jointly called Wednesday for an immediate 21-day cease-fire to allow for negotiations in the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has killed more than 600 people in Lebanon in recent days. The joint statement, negotiated on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, says the recent fighting is «intolerable and presents an unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation.» «We call for an immediate 21-day cease-fire across the Lebanon-Israel border to provide space for diplomacy,» the statement said. «We call on all parties, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the temporary cease-fire immediately.»

'Emotional overhead’ costing businesses valuable time, productivity: Survey
workplace becomes increasingly digital, a new study has found that more than a third of the workforce is losing over 40 hours a year trying to decode and interpret what their colleagues are trying to say, essentially equating to a full work week lost. Atlassian, a provider of team collaboration software, surveyed 10,000 knowledge workers across India, US, Australia, Germany and France, for research, which highlighted the hidden costs of miscommunication in today's digital-first work environment. «This is what we call ‘emotional overhead’, the wasted time and emotional turmoil caused by unclear or ambiguous communication, and poses a serious challenge for businesses. In the time that knowledge workers are wondering what their colleagues mean to say or what their manager wants from them, they could be doing mission-critical work,» said Molly Sands, head of Teamwork Lab, Atlassian.

French President Emmanuel Macron presses Iran president for Lebanon de-escalation
Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday pressed Iran's new president to use his influence to dial down soaring tensions in Lebanon, where Israel is striking Tehran-backed Hezbollah. Macron met with Masoud Pezeshkian, a self-styled reformist in a cleric-run state which Israel sees as its archenemy, on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly as casualties mounted in Lebanon. Macron «highlighted the responsibility of Iran to support a general de-escalation and use its influence with destabilizing actors,» an Elysee statement said, in a clear reference to Hezbollah.
