Russia preparing for military confrontation with West, says Estonia
Russia is preparing for a military confrontation with the West within the next decade and could be deterred by a counter build-up of armed forces, Estonia's Foreign Intelligence Service said on Tuesday. A growing number of Western officials have warned of a military threat from Russia to countries along the eastern flank of Nato, calling for Europe to get prepared by rearming. The chief of the intelligence service said the assessment was based on Russian plans to double the number of forces stationed along its border with Nato members Finland and the Baltic States of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

Mint Primer: From Europe to India, why are farmers angry?
Mint explains: Beginning January, farmers from several member-nations of the European Union (EU)—Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain—invaded cities with their tractors, burning tyres, dumping manure, raiding supermarkets, blocking access to ports and highways and choking city centres. They are protesting subsidy cuts, high energy prices, cheap grain imports from Ukraine, beef imports from Latin America, growing clout of big agribusiness and climate policies limiting the use of chemical inputs. It is a profitability crisis—due to higher farming costs and low produce prices.

Science fiction must escape its dystopic trap and foster hope
There was a big controversy in the science-fiction community last month when it emerged that the 2023 Hugo Awards, decided in October at the world convention in Chengdu, China, had inexplicably disqualified a few prominent entries from the list of nominations. Those quietly dropped included R.F. Kuang’s bestselling Babel and Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow, prompting suspicion that they might have triggered Beijing’s censorship filters. Even an entry by the legendary Neil Gaiman was disqualified.

A Tipping Point on Biden’s Decline
Democrats have been reassuring themselves that President Biden’s cognitive decline is no obstacle to his re-election, but perhaps this week will be a tipping point. Special counsel Robert Hur’s report about the President’s failure to recall basic facts of his life and Mr. Biden’s multiplying public lapses are ample reason for urging him to withdraw from the 2024 race.

Donald Trump, is increasingly adopting a stance of disengagement. Trump has expressed doubts regarding aid to Ukraine and has been critical of NATO, often arguing that it is unfair for the United States to be obligated to defend other members of the 31-nation alliance. On Saturday, he took his stance further, stating that he would “encourage" Russia to attack any member nation that had not fulfilled its financial obligations.

ET Now GBS 2024: Work-life balance top priority of young workers over being a CEO
young workers prioritise work-life-balance over being a chief executive, said Tapan Singhel, chief executive, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance at the summit on Saturday during a panel discussion on «Power Shifts to Profits: The Age of Meritocracy». «Being a CEO is not their (young people's) life anymore,» he added, and there has been a generational transition from the concept of "work is worship" towards work-life balance. He mentioned Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's comments on working 70 hours a week, while pointing out that developed countries like Germany are experimenting with a four-day work week. «Most young workers consider work life balance important, » Singhel said.
