ET Explainer: why NPCI nod for Paytm UPI onboarding matters
Paytm, operated by One 97 Communications, received approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to onboard new UPI users, lifting a regulatory freeze imposed on it earlier this year. This approval marks a significant development for the digital payments platform, which has been under scrutiny by regulators. Why was Paytm barred? In February 2024, NPCI restricted Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL), an associate entity of Paytm, from offering basic banking services citing compliance issues. This resulted in PPBL being barred from adding new users onto its UPI service. Eventually UPI payments moved from PPBL to Paytm where the latter became a third-party payment app. But the new user addition embargo was not lifted, and the application had been pending with the NPCI.

China's exporters run for cover as US election nears
Trump wins next month's U.S. presidential election, Mike Sagan's toy-making company will halve its China supply chain within a year. KidKraft, which also makes outdoor play equipment, had already shifted 20% of its production out of China to Vietnam, India and elsewhere after Trump introduced 7.5%-25% tariffs in July 2018, midway through his first term. Now Trump threatens blanket 60% tariffs on China, which Sagan sees as a game-changing «blunt» tool.

IMF retains India's GDP growth at 7 pc for FY25, says worldwide inflation fight is largely over but warns of new threats
World Economic Outlook (WEO) and expected India to grow at 7 per cent in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025 and 6.5 per cent in the next fiscal year (FY2025-26). «In India, the outlook is for GDP growth to moderate from 8.2 per cent in 2023 to 7 per cent in 2024 and 6.5 per cent in 2025, because pent-up demand accumulated during the pandemic has been exhausted, as the economy reconnects with its potential,» the IMF said in the World Economic Outlook. Looking beyond the one-year outlook, the global economy faces a feeble period of medium-term growth, the IMF said as it called for a slate of reforms in its latest WEO during the annual meetings of the fund and the World Bank in Washington.

India is a significant market for aseptic packaging: SIG’s Samuel Sigrist
SIG Combibloc wants to make a difference. Last year, the Swiss firm — with a India clientele of brands like Amul, KMF, MilkyMist, Heritage Dairy, Coca-Cola, Parle Agro — began constructing its 10th global aseptic packaging plant in Ahmedabad, which will create over 300 jobs. In a conversation with ET Digital, Samuel Sigrist, CEO, SIG Group, talks about aseptic packaging technology and how India is the right market for it. Edited excepts: Economic Times (ET): What kind of potential is SIG looking to cater to in India when it comes to sustainable dairy packaging or sustainable packaging? Samuel Sigrist (SS): This is an amazing starting point, because in some markets in Asia, we first need to teach people to like milk. But that is not the challenge here. So the problem statement here starts with an opportunity statement. It is the largest milk market in the world and less than 10% is processed and packaged; and even a smaller part is in the safest form in the aseptic beverage carton. Now that just shows you the upside that we see. What drives this upside is not just the population growth, but also rising disposable income growth, a growing middle class and urbanisation.
