Govt studies tariff cuts under efforts to spur green hydrogen
India is considering cuts to tariffs on imports of machinery needed to manufacture green hydrogen, as the nation pushes to become a major hub for the cleaner fuel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is discussing a plan to exempt some equipment from import levies and to reduce goods and services tax on the fuel, which is currently set at 12%, according to people familiar with the details, who requested anonymity to discuss private deliberations. The changes would cover both green hydrogen and green ammonia, though would only apply to production of fuel which is then exported rather than sold domestically, the people said. Green hydrogen is produced by using renewable energy to split the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water.

Who is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Khalistani separatist believed to be the brainchild of Pakistan's ISI?
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the Khalistani separatist and Indian-origin citizen of the US and Canada, is in the spotlight after US this week named Vikash Yadav, a former Indian intelligence officer once associated with the Research and Analysis Wing, or R&AW — as the central figure in a failed plot to kill him. According to a wanted poster by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Vikas Yadav is the second Indian to be named in this controversy. The US Justice Department has charged Vikash Yadav with murder-for-hire and money laundering. According to reports, the plot allegedly began in May 2023, when Vikash Yadav then reportedly an employee of the Indian government, allegedly collaborating with individuals in India and overseas to execute the assassination of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

VVDN in advanced stages of designing mobile phone for US brand: President
VVDN is in advanced stages of designing mobile phones with 5G support for an American brand, a top official told ET, adding that the company plans to invest $100 million in the next 3-5 years to expand capacity. VVDN is aiming to take advantage of the shift of global companies away from China and be the first Indian manufacturer to have design capabilities in-house, without support from a technology partner. “We are investing in designing phones. We have already taken that initiative, and we are building a 5G phone as we speak for the North American market. We already have a customer, and the designs are in advanced stages,” Vivek Bansal, president, VVDN, told ET.

31% of urban Indians unsure about retirement corpus needed, study shows
Max Life Insurance’s India Retirement Index Study (IRIS) 4.0. Conducted in partnership with Kantar, the study shows a slight improvement in retirement preparedness, with the index rising from 47 to 49 points. Despite this, financial uncertainty continues to affect a large segment of the population. The study also shows that 31% of respondents are unsure about how much they will need to maintain their lifestyle post-retirement. This lack of clarity is a significant risk, especially as life expectancy increases.

Need earnings growth to keep Indian stock market going: Mark Matthews
"Geopolitical events do not seem to be causing any impact on the world economy. In fact, there is potential for some deceleration in geopolitical problems over the next 12 months," says Mark Matthews, Julius Baer. The disconcerting factor we were discussing is when it comes to the quarterly earnings back home, is there some sort of a sense of a slowdown that could be prolonged due to macro concerns in India? Mark Matthews: I do not know if it is macro concerns, but you are absolutely right. I think the major issue facing India now is the deceleration in earnings growth. And the Nifty will still clock around 10% earnings growth this year, but the most recent quarter, it is looking very flattish.

Supercharging one key market is crucial to India’s $5 trillion goals
Nothing illustrates that challenge better than the 47 trillion rupee ($559 billion) corporate bond market. It’s one of the world’s smallest as a percentage of gross domestic product, at just 16%, even after record growth. Bankers in Mumbai say doubling that ratio would better help finance ambitious goals, like becoming a $5 trillion economy in the next three years. One of the major impediments is a longstanding rule from authorities that makes it hard for long-term investors like insurers and pension funds to go big on infrastructure. The regulation bars them from investing in notes rated below AA, which in India are deemed risky because they’re hard to offload in a smaller market during times of stress.

Time has come for private sector to take lead in defence participation: Rajnath Singh
Rajnath Singh on Friday said the private sector must play a leading role in defence sector, citing its ability to drive innovation and adapt to rapid changes. Speaking at the DRDO Industry Workshop on defence technology acceleration in Delhi, Singh said, «Technology's impact on the defence sector is not limited to conventional warfare; it has given birth to unconventional warfare, including drones, cyber warfare, bio-weapons, and space defence. These elements pose challenges to the defence sector.» «I think the time has come for the private sector to take the lead in defence sector participation. I say this because the private industry has the capability not only to absorb rapid changes but also to create new innovations,» he added.
