Four years after downing of Flight PS 752, families say Iran regime still trying to silence them
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752.Fifty-five Canadians and 30 permanent residents were killed when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp shot down the passenger plane in the skies over Tehran with a pair of surface-to-air missles. While families deal with the ongoing sorrow, the Iranian regime has ramped up its campaign to try to silence those who speak out for the victims of Flight PS 752.Canadian Iranian human rights activist Hamed Esmaeilion — whose wife and daughter were killed in the downing of the flight — says his mother has been banned from leaving Iran for at least six months.“She was in distress. I have heard that she was shivering when she heard the news,” Esmaeilion says. His mother, Tooran Shamsollahi, was stopped at Tehran’s airport on her way to Canada to be with Esmaeilion to mark the anniversary of the deaths of his wife, Parisa, and nine-year-old daughter, Reera.Esmaeilion says he believes the ban is a form of revenge for his activism, following his calls for action after a former senior minister of the regime was seen vacationing in Canada.Seyed Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi is believed to have visited Canada after being spotted in the background of a TV news report on Quebec tourism and then caught on video visiting Casa Loma in Toronto in August 2023.Global Affairs Canada posted to X that it is deeply concerned about the intimidation of family members of victims of Flight PS 752.Canada is deeply concerned about new reports of intimidation of family members of the victims of Flight PS752.

Iran Guards commander challenges 'enemy' naval presence in region
Guards vowed on Saturday to reach «the enemy» far and near as tensions soar on key shipping routes where Tehran's allies have been attacking vessels. «Today, we are facing an all-out battle with the enemy,» said Guards commander Hossein Salami at a ceremony in the southern Gulf port city of Bandar Abbas, where the Guards' navy unveiled a new ship named «Abu Mahdi» and 100 missile launchers. Salami did not name the enemy, but 22 nations have agreed to participate in a U.S.-led coalition to safeguard commercial traffic in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement. The Houthi attacks since November are a show of support for the Palestinian group Hamas in its war with Israel. In response, many major shipping companies have switched to the longer and more costly route around the Africa's Cape of Good Hope rather than pass through the Suez Canal, which handles about 12% of global trade. «We need to defend our national interests to wherever they extend,» Salami said in a televised speech. «It will be harmful for the enemy to be found near and at a half distant.

The significance of guarding the Red Sea
Oil and natural gas prices have started rising as traders bet on the continuation of Houthi attacks disrupting shipping in the Red Sea. The Yemen-based rebel formation, backed by Iran, has been attacking shipping along this critical region with suicide drones, missiles and rockets since the Gaza War. This is part of a strategy to impose a naval blockade of Israel, since the Houthis are allies of Hamas due to their strong connections with Iran.

Oil steadies as Middle East supply worries balance economy concerns
Oil steadied on Thursday, largely unwinding an earlier rally, as concerns over Middle Eastern supply and disruptions at an oilfield in Libya were countered by concern about economic growth and demand. Local protests forced a production shutdown on Wednesday at Libya's Sharara oilfield, which can produce up to 300,000 barrels per day (bpd). The field, one of Libya's largest, has been a frequent target for political protests. Brent crude fell 30 cents, or 0.4%, to $77.95 a barrel by 1450 GMT, after earlier rising over $1.
