US President Joe Biden is still expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits Washington next week but it will depend on his recovery from Covid, the White House said Thursday. «We have every expectation that the two leaders will have a chance to see each other while Prime Minister Netanyahu is in town,» National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters in a briefing. Netanyahu is set to address the US Congress on Wednesday and Israeli media had reported a meeting with Biden on Monday, but Kirby said, «I can't tell you at this point what that exactly is going to look like.»

Israeli military is checking whether an explosion in central Tel Aviv in the early hours of Friday was caused by a drone attack, the army said. Police said the body of a man was found in an apartment close to the explosion and said the circumstances were being investigated. «Earlier tonight (Friday), an explosion sounded in the area of central Tel Aviv. We are looking into the reports that it was an aerial target. The incident is under review,» the military said in a brief statement.

Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise visit to troops in southern Gaza on Thursday, his office said, just days before he was set to give a speech to the US Congress. Netanyahu's visit to the southern city of Rafah was announced hours after Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, visited Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site. Ben Gvir's move could disrupt sensitive talks aimed at reaching a cease-fire in the 9-month-old Israel-Hamas war. Ben-Gvir, an ultranationalist settler leader, said he went up to the flashpoint site to pray for the return of Israeli hostages «but without a reckless deal, without surrendering.» Israeli negotiators landed in Cairo on Wednesday to keep working on the talks. Tensions over the compound have fuelled past rounds of violence. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Ben-Gvir's visit as a «provocative intrusion» that endangered the fragile status quo regarding the Jerusalem compound, which is revered by Jews as the Temple Mount and by Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, a holy site and important national symbol.

US military's problem-plagued mission to bring desperately needed aid into Gaza via a temporary pier has ended, with deliveries shifting to an Israeli port, a senior American officer said Wednesday. US President Joe Biden has expressed disappointment in the performance of the pier, which has repeatedly broken free of the shore because of bad weather since its initial installation in mid-May, limiting the time it has been operational. «The maritime surge mission involving the pier is complete, so there's no more need to use the pier,» Vice Admiral Brad Cooper told journalists. «It's now transitioning… to a port in Ashdod, Israel,» which «offers a more sustainable path.»

Gaza Strip on Tuesday, and Palestinian health officials said at least 57 people were killed in Israeli bombardments of southern and central areas. In Rafah, where Israeli forces have been operating since May, five Palestinians were killed in an airstrike on a house, Gaza health officials said. In nearby Khan Younis, a man, his wife, and two children were killed, they said. Later on Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike on a car killed at least 17 Palestinians and wounded 26 others in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, the officials said. The airstrike hit near a tented area housing displaced families in Attar Street in the humanitarian-designated area of Al-Mawasi, the health ministry said. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a senior militant of the Islamic Jihad group, an ally of Hamas.

Adani Group expects its ports business to grow at a robust pace, with the Indian operations expected to double by volume in five years, said a senior company executive. Speaking to ET, Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ) said the aim is to transform India's leading port operator into a global ports hub by boosting the share of international traffic. The ports business currently gets about 5% of its total volume from international operations, which it is aiming to double by 2030, said Adani. The ports business has been seeing exponential growth in the past few years, and Adani expects the trajectory to continue. «Currently, the split between our ports and logistics segment is 70:30, and we expect the same to continue because while our logistics segment is growing, so is our ports segment, and that too at a much faster pace,» he said. Revenue from the ports segment grew to Rs 20,972 crore in FY24, from Rs 17,304 crore in the previous year. On the other hand, revenue from the logistics segment grew to Rs 2,079 crore from Rs 1,744 crore in the same period.
