UPS Citi Art show classical Your ultimate European summer planned: 36 hours in Palermo, Italy
Italy," reads stenciled graffiti around Palermo, a sign that some in the Sicilian capital view the city as both a physical and cultural outlier from the mainland. Influenced by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Spanish conquerors, the port city has long been known for its distinctive dialect, original street food, medieval churches, faded Baroque buildings and — less happily — a historical association with the Mafia. But recent years have seen remarkable developments: Ambitious restaurants, a crop of natural wine bars and compelling new museums have upped the profile and allure of Palermo, whose historical intrigue and low prices (relative to north and central Italy) remain largely intact. These places also provide refuges from the heat — Palermo has had a scorching summer that ignited deadly wildfires, now under control, around the region. ITINERARYFriday4 p.m. | See art in a palace

Climate change is destroying southern Europe. An era comes to an end." This tweet in early July by Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, went down badly in Italy. The country’s minister for tourism, Daniela Santanchè, sourly retorted that she thanked Mr Lauterbach for picking Italy for his holiday, but the Italian government was well aware of climate change and that sustainability was one of the central elements of its strategy for managing tourism.

He cited the latest outlook from the International Energy Agency, which shows India's oil demand rising from the current 5 million barrels per day (mbpd) to 7 mbpd by 2030, and about 9 mbpd by 2040.

UPS Progressive CEO Gap track Female CEOs lose ground in retail sector’s top echelons
In recent months, major retailers such as Gap, Stitch Fix, Victoria’s Secret, Kohl’s, the Vitamin Shoppe and the RealReal have appointed men to CEO positions previously held by women. Others such as Macy’s, VF Corp and Italian denim brand Diesel replaced men with men at the top. In general, it is rare for a female CEO to be succeeded by another woman regardless of the industry, according to an analysis by Catalyst. “It reminds me of the Barbie movie,” said Kimberly Lee Minor, who is the CEO of the consulting firm Bumbershoot. “We live in this society where women control the majority of consumer spending. They make the decisions and yet we still haven’t moved forward, and we have to go into this cycle.” While the number of female CEOs had been trending upward in recent years, nearly 90% of Fortune 500 companies are run by men. Of the 86 retail companies in the Fortune 1000, 13 had a woman as CEO as of July 2023, down slightly from the year before, according to the executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles. Retail executives have long been quick to note that purchases are largely driven by women, who make most of the spending decisions for their households. The majority of the industry’s entry-level workforce is also female. Seventy-two percent of cashiers are women, and about half of retail salespersons are women, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
