INSTC played a major role in pushing Russia-India trade volume in 2023: RZD CEO
economic cooperation – in 2023 with Russia for the first time getting into the three top trade partners of India due to contribution of International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), CEO of RZD Logistics (top Russian logistics company that operates INSTC) Dmitry Murev told ET. The export from Russia to India in the 2022-2023 financial year increased by 4.7 times and activation of INSTC is one of the most important factors that contributed to this, according to Murev. “Our company managed to build strong partnership with the leading participants of transport and logistics industry of India, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, which, in particular, allowed to cut the net cost of the end-to-end transportation service along the Eastern route of INSTC by 50% since August of 2022,” Murev informed. All three branches of INSTC – Western, Trans-Caspian and Eastern – are working. Each of these routes has its own infrastructure characteristics and perspectives, uniting certain groups of member countries of INSTC, with India and Russia being actively involved in the work of the corridor on all three routes, RZD CEO pointed out. The Western route of INSTC connects Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran by rail and auto transport for connecting to India and Persian Gulf countries.

To cut reliance on China, Russia turns to India for aluminium feedstock
LONDON : Russia has stepped up imports of the aluminium feedstock alumina from India in recent months to supply its vast Siberian plants, a move that diversifies the sanctions-hit country's supply, helps reduce dependence on China and cuts costs. After invading Ukraine, the world's second biggest producer of aluminium lost two crucial sources of alumina, used to make aluminium metal, as a refinery in Ukraine suspended production and Australia banned supplies to Russia. While Russia and China are on friendly terms, aluminium production in China is rising, leaving less price flexibility for Russia to buy alumina.

North Korea set to end years-long sporting isolation at Asian Games
North Korea has 191 athletes signed up for the Asian Games starting next week, according to organisers, suggesting the country is poised to end its more than three-year isolation from the global sporting arena. North Koreans are listed on the Games' website for accredited media to compete in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in sports including athletics, gymnastics, basketball, football, boxing and weightlifting. North Koreans were similarly down to compete at a weightlifting tournament in Cuba in June, but they failed to show. North Korea closed its already tight borders in early 2020 following the outbreak of the pandemic and skipped the Tokyo Olympics, which were pushed back to 2021 because of Covid. It was then banned by the International Olympic Committee from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for failing to take part in Tokyo. There have been recent signs that the border restrictions have been eased slightly, with a taekwondo team allowed to travel to a competition last month in Kazakhstan. Prior to that, North Korea had not sent any of its domestic athletes to overseas competitions since the pandemic. The sporting action at the Games in Hangzhou starts on September 19, four days before the opening ceremony, with North Korea scheduled to face Taiwan in men's football that day. Leader Kim Jong Un is said to be an avid sports fan and Games hosts China are North Korea's longtime ally and main economic benefactor. North Korea has traditionally been especially strong in weightlifting, dominating the event at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018 with eight golds. Ri Song Gum and Rim Un Sim, who both won gold in the women's weightlifting five years ago, are scheduled to appear in Hangzhou. But North Korea has also been among the

Swift begins beta tests of CBDC connector
The co-operative in March published the findings of a 12-week period of sandbox testing, in which almost 5,000 transactions were simulated between two different blockchain networks and with existing fiat-based payment systems. The beta solution has taken its next step, with three central banks and monetary authorities, including the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the National Bank of Kazakhstan, integrating the solution with their own infrastructure for direct testing.Swift has also initiated a second phase of sandbox testing, in which commercial banks, central banks and financial market infrastructures are exploring additional use cases, including trigger-based payments for digital trade platforms, foreign exchange models, delivery vs payment and liquidity saving mechanisms.

Economic corridors: Key to sustainable growth
Mint takes a closer look at the idea and the benefit it offers. An economic corridor, a term coined by the Asian Development Bank, is an integrated network of infrastructure—including rail, road, and port—within a defined geographical area that connect various economic hubs.
