Worst drought in four decades: Zimbabwe to cull 200 elephants to feed its people
Zimbabwe, facing the worst drought in four decades, is set to cull 200 elephants to help feed its people, according to wildlife authorities. This decision follows a similar plan by neighbouring Namibia, which announced earlier this month that it would cull 160 wildlife animals, including 83 elephants, due to the severe drought affecting its population. The El Niño-induced drought has devastated southern Africa, leading both Zimbabwe and Namibia to declare states of emergency. The drought has directly impacted 68 million people in the region, resulting in severe food shortages and dire conditions. Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks), told Reuters, “We can confirm that we are planning to cull about 200 elephants across the country. We are working on the details of how this will be carried out.” Farawo also confirmed that the elephant meat will be distributed to communities in Zimbabwe affected by the drought.

Namibia plans to butcher 723 wild animals including zebras, hippos, impalas, and even 83 elephants, for meat!
Namibia is planning to cull 723 wild animals, including 83 elephants, to feed the country amid the worst drought in a century, the New York Times has reported. Nearly half of the country's 1.4 million people are in a hunger crisis. The move aims to provide food and reduce dangerous encounters between humans and wildlife due to scarce resources, the report added. According to Namibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, the plan is «necessary» and aligns with the constitutional mandate to utilize natural resources for the benefit of Namibian citizens. The strategy of harvesting wild animals for food is not uncommon. Rose Mwebaza, director of the United Nations Environment Programme's Africa Office, stated, «Well-managed, sustainable harvesting of healthy wild animal populations can be a precious source of food for communities.» Drought is impacting a significant portion of southern Africa. The U.N. World Food Program noted in June that over 30 million people in the region are affected. Benjamin Suarato, spokesperson for the U.S. Agency for International Development, mentioned that droughts are a familiar issue in southern Africa, with several occurring in the past decade, including from 2018 to 2021. However, this particular drought is especially severe and wide-reaching, said Juliane Zeidler, country director of the World Wildlife Fund in Namibia.

Did cheetah introduction increase revenue like Mumbai penguin project? Aaditya Thackeray
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday wondered whether the introduction of cheetahs at Kuno Park in Madhya Pradesh translated into the generation of revenue, claiming penguins in the Mumbai zoo boosted the income of the civic body. «One should find out how much revenue generated after cheetahs were translocated to India (in Kuno Park in Madhya Pradesh),» Thackeray told reporters. The former state minister claimed the introduction of penguins in the civic-run Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan contributed to increased earnings for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Why almost nobody is buying green hydrogen
fuel has provoked no end of excitement. From the deserts of Australia and Namibia to the wind-blasted straits of Patagonia, companies and governments worldwide plan to build almost 1,600 plants to make it. The gas can be produced cleanly by using wind- or solar-powered electricity in a process that splits the molecule from water. There’s only one problem: The vast majority of those projects don’t have a single customer stepping up to buy the fuel. Among the handful with some kind of fuel purchase agreement, most have vague, nonbinding arrangements that can be quietly discarded if the potential buyers back out. As a result, many of the projects now touted with great fanfare by countries vying to become “the Saudi Arabia of hydrogen” will likely never get built. Just 12% of hydrogen plants considered low-carbon because they avoid natural gas or mitigate emissions have customers with agreements to use the fuel, according to BloombergNEF. The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.

MP govt refuses RTI info on Project Cheetah
Madhya Pradesh forest department has refused to provide information under the Right to Information Act on management of cheetahs brought from Africa and their cubs born in India. In response to a request filed by wildlife activist Ajay Dubey, the department cited Section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act, which allows a public authority to withhold information if its disclosure would prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific, or economic interests of the State, relations with a foreign State, or lead to the incitement of an offence.

T20 World Cup: Australia wary of Scotland threat; Pakistan take on Ireland in dead rubber
T20 World Cup here with the outcome set to influence Super Eight qualification. With Australia having already booked one spot for the Super Eight from Group B, Scotland and England are in race for the second position. Scotland will go through if they beat Australia or even if their contest is washed out, but in case of a defeat to the Mitchell Marsh-led side and England winning against Namibia hours earlier, the Scotswould miss the bus. For England, a win over Namibia is a must and if the Australians do them a favour by beating Scotland, chances will only brighten up.
