India to cut floor price for basmati rice exports, say sources
India will cut the floor price for basmati rice exports in the coming days, sources familiar with the matter said, after millers and traders complained about a sharp drop in overseas sales of the premium aromatic grain. India will lower the basmati floor price to $850 a metric ton, down from $1,200 a ton, to help millers and traders ship out the rice grade, said the sources, who didn't wish to be identified as they are not authorised to talk to media. Last month, India fixed the floor price, or the minimum export price (MEP), for basmati rice shipments at $1,200 a metric ton. Authorities said the MEP was imposed to help New Delhi ensure that non-basmati rice was not exported as basmati rice. In July, India surprised buyers by imposing a ban on the export of widely consumed non-basmati white rice, following a ban on broken rice exports last year. «The decision to lower the basmati MEP would help farmers who were losing money on account of falling exports,» said Prem Garg, president of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation. «The move will also help India retain its pre-eminent position in the global basmati rice market.» Since basmati rice is not widely consumed in India, and the new season crop will start arriving in the market from next month, India would have faced a glut of the superior grade, Garg said. «A large stockpile would have hammered prices and hurt farmers and India's rice sector, so the move to lower the MEP will be quite helpful,» he said. India and Pakistan exclusively grow premium, aromatic basmati rice.

Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against wanted Khalistani leader Karanvir Singh
Interpol, on Monday issued a Red Corner Notice against Karanvir Singh, a member of the banned terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International. Interpol updated its website by putting out a Red Corner Notice for the Khalistleader. As per the Interpol portal, 38-year-old Karanvir Singh has roots in Punjab's Kapurthala district. Further, according to Interpol, Singh is wanted by India for criminal conspiracy, murder, offences related to the Arms Act, and Explosive Substances Act, raising funds for terrorist acts, conspiracy, and being a member of a terrorist gang or organisation. A Red Corner Notice is a request to the law enforcement authorities of Interpol's member countries to find and temporarily detain a person until extradition, surrender, or a similar legal process can take place. Earlier, Interpol issued a Red Notice to all member countries against gangster Himanshu alias Bhau, who is believed to be living abroad. Giving details, a spokesman of Haryana Police said Rohtak Police succeeded in getting a Red Corner Notice issued against a most wanted accused, who is believed to have fled abroad. The Red Corner Notice against the wanted pro-Khalistani leader comes amid a diplomatic spat between New Delhi and Ottawa in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claim of an India hand in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi dismissed the allegations, calling them 'absurd' and 'motivated'. At a news conference in New York, the Canadian PM, however, failed to present any evidence to back his claim of Indian involvement in

ECB vows to 'change' cricket after equality report
The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) published its report in June revealing «widespread» discrimination in the game. The commission, set up by the England and Wales Cricket Board, made 44 recommendations, including a call for an «unqualified public apology» from the board for its failings, which the ECB made immediately. The ICEC was established in 2021 following a racism scandal centred around the treatment of Pakistan-born bowler Azeem Rafiq at Yorkshire. The ECB published its response to the ICEC report on Monday, saying it would be «taking forward most of the ICEC's recommendations». It said it would set up a new cricket regulator, independent of the governing ECB, responsible for enforcement of regulations and carrying out investigations. The ECB also said it would invest a minimum of £25 million ($30 million) a year above forecasted women's revenues to grow women's and girls' cricket at all levels. It also plans to enhance equality, diversity and inclusion standards for county teams. That would include more ambitious targets for gender and ethnic diversity, with the power to reallocate matches from venues if there is evidence of non-compliance. However, the ECB did not agree to all of the report's recommendations, including on equal pay for male and female players. The ICEC report called for overall equal average pay at international level by 2030 and equal average pay and prize money in domestic cricket by 2029. Match fees paid to England's women for international matches are already equal to those paid to England's men. «The ICEC report was a massive moment for the sport and a responsibility we take extremely seriously, to bring about the changes we all want to see,» said ECB chief executive

PCB writes to ICC as wait for Indian visa continues less than two days before scheduled travel
Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday raised serious concerns with the ICC over the delay in national team's travel to India for the World Cup due to visa issues and claimed the anxious wait has already impacted its preparation for the 50-over showpiece. The PCB wrote to the ICC as it continues to wait for visa clearance from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Pakistan were supposed to have a two-day team bonding session in Dubai before their scheduled arrival in Hyderabad on September 27 but it has been cancelled with uncertainty over Indian visa. The Babar Azam-led side plays two warm-up games and as many World Cup matches in Hyderabad starting with the practice fixture against New Zealand on September 29. In the letter addressed to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, the PCB also claimed that its concerns over visa being granted to players, team officials, fans and journalists for the World Cup in India have not been addressed for more than three years.
