Mint Explainer: India abstains from UN vote on Israel-Gaza conflict. Why?
India recently chose to abstain from a UN General Assembly vote that sought a humanitarian truce and the protection of civilians amid the intensifying conflict between Israel and Gaza, drawing significant domestic scrutiny. Here's a breakdown of India's decision and its implications - The UN General Assembly's resolution called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities", especially given that the death toll in Gaza has reportedly surpassed 8,000, due to Israel's ongoing airstrike campaign. The conflict escalated following Hamas' attacks in Israel on 7 October, leading Israel to launch a ground offensive into Gaza.

Russia says it shot down 36 Ukrainian drones as fighting grinds on in Ukraine’s east
Russia’s Defense Ministry said Sunday. “The air defense systems in place destroyed 36 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the Black Sea and the northwestern part of the Crimean peninsula,” the ministry wrote on Telegram. Local authorities in the southern Krasnodar region bordering the Black Sea said that a fire broke out at an oil refinery in the early hours of Sunday, but did not specify the cause. “The reasons for the incident are being established,” a statement from local authorities said, amid claims in local media outlets that the fire had been caused by a drone strike or debris from a downed drone. Drone strikes and shelling on the Russian border regions and Moscow-annexed Crimea are a regular occurrence.

Elon Musk's Starlink To Provide Connectivity To International Aid Groups In Gaza: What Is Starlink and Where is it Available
Elon Musk recently announced he would provide connectivity support to internationally recognized humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza through his satellite communication system, Starlink. He stated on the social media platform known as X (formerly Twitter) in response to a statement from the U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She had raised concerns about the communication blackout in Gaza. Following the extensive Israeli military operations, including airstrikes and ground incursions, aid organizations faced significant challenges. They reported a breakdown in phone and internet services, hampering their ability to maintain contact with their teams operating in the Gaza Strip. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Starlink, under the management of SpaceX, Elon Musk's company, was rapidly established within Ukraine. This communication network, essential for advanced military personnel operating in regions with impaired communication infrastructure, became an important asset for Kyiv in the field of battle.

Zelenskiy says Russia loses 'at least a brigade' trying to take Avdiivka
Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday Russian forces have lost at least a brigade worth of troops trying to advance on Ukraine's eastern town of Avdiivka. Russia renewed a push to encircle the embattled town in mid-October, trying to overwhelm Ukrainian positions with constant barrages of artillery and waves of troops and fighting vehicles, according to local and military authorities in Ukraine. «The invaders made several attempts to surround Avdiivka, but each time our soldiers stopped them and threw them back, causing painful losses. In these cases, the enemy lost at least a brigade,» Zelenskiy told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a phone call, the president's office said in a statement. Reuters could not independently verify the assertion and there was no immediate comment from Russia. Brigades vary in size and can number between 1,500 and 8,000 troops.
