Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Friday stated that the central transfers from the Union Government in the form of Grants-in-aid and share in central taxes as a proportion of total revenue receipts have reduced significantly. The Tamil Nadu Minister while presenting the state budget for 2025-26 said that the state's own revenues have been increasing due to the efforts of the state Government. «While the State's Own Revenues have been increasing due to the efforts of the Government, the central transfers from the Union Government in the form of Grants-in-aid and share in central taxes as a proportion of total revenue receipts have reduced significantly,» Thennarasu said. He said that withholding of funds under Samagra Shiksha, denial of funds under NDRF for Cyclone Fengal, and a paltry release of Rs 276 crore for two massive disasters in the form of Cyclone Michaung and the unprecedented rainfall in southern districts have all caused severe strain on the State Finances. «In 2024-25, the grants-in-aid are estimated to substantially reduce to Rs.20,538 crore in the Revised Estimates, as compared to the Rs. 23,354 crore projected in the Budget Estimates. Anticipating the release of the entire funds due to the State under Samagra Shiksha in the ensuing year, the Grants-in-aid receivable from the Union Government are estimated at Rs.23,834 crore in Budget Estimates 2025-26,» he added.

Congress on Thursday slammed the NDA government in Bihar over the incident of setting ablaze of houses in Nawada, saying it is another proof of the "jungle raj" prevailing in the state and exposes «the horrifying picture of injustice against the Bahujans» there. While Congress leaders pegged the number of houses set ablaze at over 80, police said about 21 houses were set on fire in Nawada district. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Saturday alleged that the BJP has «struck a deal» with some regional parties and some independent candidates to be part of the government in Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Jammu, Abdullah said he was «silent» about Apni Party and People's Conference during his speech at the BJP's manifesto launch on Friday. "...those who have struck a deal with Delhi will not fulfill your demands. If you need evidence for this, just look at the statement of Home Minister Amit Shah in Jammu yesterday," the NC vice president said. «The home minister listed the parties with which the BJP will not form the government. He was, however, silent about the independents because they are hand in glove (with them). He was silent about Apni Party and People's Conference,» he said.

Amit Shah on Saturday assured that Jammu and Kashmir's statehood would be restored after the Assembly elections a rally addressing BJP workers in Jammu. Congress Committee (BPCC) on Saturday announced a statewide agitation from August 12 in protest against the Centre's refusal to grant special category status to the state. Bihar Congress chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh said, «The denial of special category status to Bihar is gross injustice. The party will not tolerate this stepmotherly treatment. The BPCC will launch a statewide agitation from August 12, including dharnas outside block and district magistrate offices on August 13 and 14.» Singh added that the party will outline its further agitation plans after August 14. He highlighted that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been advocating for special category status since 2005. «Despite being an alliance partner in the NDA government, Kumar failed to secure this status for the state,» he added.
