Centre has released Rs 3,454 cr for drought relief, says Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the Centre has approved Rs 3,499 crore as drought relief and released only Rs 3,454 crore and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give the balance amount as soon as possible. The chief minister thanked the Supreme Court for warning the Central government and providing some drought relief to the state. «According to the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) rules, the state was supposed to be paid Rs 18,171 crore, but the Central government has only approved Rs 3,498.98 crore. This money is not sufficient for the drought relief. Our fight for the arrears will continue,» he told reporters here.

Husband has no control over wife's 'stridhan,' rules Supreme Court
husband has no control over his wife's 'stridhan' (woman's property) and while he may use it during the time of his distress, he has a moral obligation to return it to his wife, the Supreme Court has reiterated while directing a man to pay Rs 25 lakh to a woman in return for her lost gold. The woman in this case claimed that 89 sovereigns of gold were gifted to her by her family at the time of marriage. Additionally, after the wedding, her father gave a cheque for Rs 2 lakh to her husband. According to the woman, on the first night of their marriage, the husband took custody of all her jewellery and entrusted the same to his mother under the garb of safekeeping. She alleged that all the jewellery was misappropriated by the husband and his mother to discharge their pre-existing financial liabilities. The Family Court, in 2011, held that the husband and his mother had indeed misappropriated the appellant's gold jewellery and that she was entitled to recoup the loss caused to her by the said misappropriation.

PSU lenders do not have the power to issue Look Out Circulars: Bombay HC
Bombay High Court on Tuesday ruled that public sector lenders do not have the power to issue Look Out Circulars (LOCs) against citizens and foreigners under the office memoranda (OM) of the Central government. The division bench of Justice GS Patel and Madhav Jamdar ruled this in a clutch of petitions challenging the LOCs issued to restrain people who are indebted to public sector banks from travelling abroad. A detailed order is awaited. The court, however, while terming empowerment of the managers of public sector banks to issue LOCs as ‘arbitrary’, clarified that OMs of the central government were not ultra vires to the Constitution. With this ruling, all such LOCs issued at the request of the public sector banks were quashed and set aside by the high court.

The hunger artist, when writing is a per diem exercise
Ernest Hemingway once said that he liked to look at Cezanne's paintings when he was ravenously hungry. In his 1964 memoir of his Paris apprentice days, The Moveable Feast, Hemingway writes: 'I learned to understand Cezanne much better and to see truly how he made landscapes when I was hungry. I used to wonder if he were hungry too when he painted; but I thought possibly it was only that he had forgotten to eat. It was one of those unsound but illuminating thoughts you have when you have been sleepless or hungry.' Hunger sharpens one's critical faculties. It also sharpens one's ability to feel and seek out injustice. And then, I looked at myself in the mirror. No way could someone ever mistake me for a writer. There was nothing frugal about my frame. I looked like a well-fed bulldog just awakened from his siesta.

Congress facing problems to support candidates due to fund issues: Jairam Ramesh
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday that the party is facing difficulties in supporting its candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, mainly due to financial crunch caused by «steps taken by the central government». Addressing a press conference here, he said the party will fare very well in the polls and the opposition alliance will secure a «clear and convincing majority» despite all attempts to scuttle its progress. «There has been an attempt to create problems for us. Our accounts were frozen and Rs 300 crore of money received through public funding were stolen by the PM,» Ramesh said. In February, the Income Tax department has frozen four main bank accountants of the Congress on a tax demand of Rs 210 crore for 2018-19.

CM Siddaramaiah accuses FM Sitharaman of lying on drought relief fund to Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday alleged that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lied when she said that the drought relief fund was not released because the Model Code of Conduct is in force. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Sitharaman sought to defend the Centre saying procedures to release funds had taken time by which time the MCC came into effect. She said that after the Karnataka government submitted a memorandum in October and the inter-ministerial central team conducted a spot assessment, the release of drought relief had to go through a few procedures and that it had taken time. According to the finance minister, the central authorities had written to the Election Commission on March 28 to get prior approval to convene a high-level committee, given that the Model Code of Conduct in force — and the EC's approval is awaited with regard to the grant of drought relief.

BJP won't win even 200 seats in LS polls as per RSS survey, claims K'taka Minister Priyank Kharge
Kharge on Saturday claimed the BJP, according to an internal survey of the RSS, will not win even 200 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls and won't cross even eight seats in the state. Accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of «lying», for his recent statement alleging delay on the part of the state government in submission of a proposal to the Centre seeking drought relief, he said Shah should have been the «Minister of misinformation». «RSS' internal survey says they (BJP) won't get even 200 seats. RSS is saying it. In the state, they won't cross even eight seats. How will they win, in fourteen to fifteen seats there is internal fighting (in BJP),» Kharge claimed. Speaking to reporters here, he said several senior BJP leaders are even speaking about the need to cleanse the party.

Work is my religion; work is my culture, says Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal campaigned for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections at various places in the Margherita Assembly constituency. The senior leader from BJP was accorded warm reception by the people as Sonowal visited North Margherita Rangamancha, Nagapathar Rangamancha, Udaipur Rangamancha, Lidu Railway Theatre among others. Sonowal, “The Congress is synonymous with the Gandhi family; it hasn't transcended beyond that. This party's reputation in India revolves around corruption, nepotism, and fostering division. The people of Assam has endured unrest, rampant corruption and discontent during the Congress era. The injustices inflicted upon the Assamese people by the Congress remain unforgettable. Who will hold accountable those who seek refuge behind the Congress for the security of the people? I entrust everything to the public. I am confident that those who want to piggyback on Congress will fall flat in the court of people’s will, as people will pull them down.”

Six months in Tihar jail have strengthened resolve to fight against 'injustice, dictatorship': Sanjay Singh
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday said the six months he spent in jail boosted his morale and strengthened his resolve to raise his voice against "injustice and dictatorship". Shameful to lie to the people of Karnataka: Krishna Byre Gowda challenges Amit Shah’s claim of delaying drought relief petition
Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Wednesday issued a challenge to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asking him that if Shah had indeed written to the Election Commission about the Karnataka government delaying applying for drought relief, he must produce the related documents immediately. The Home minister had made the allegation in a rally in Bengaluru on Tuesday, provoking the ire of the Karnataka Congress regime over the contentious issue. “It is shameful to lie to the people of Karnataka to cover up this injustice. Do Kannadigas exist only to pay taxes and vote for you?” the revenue minister asked. Karnataka, he said, ranked second among the highest tax-paying states. It was shameful to divert its taxes to other states, cheat the state during a drought, and then lie about it, he added. Gowda gave a timeline of the drought relief petition process, saying the Karnataka government declared drought in the state on September 13, one and a half months earlier than the October 31 deadline. “If you need proof of our submission for drought relief in September, we can provide a copy of the letter from the Secretary of the Central Home Department dated September 27,” he said.

Lok Sabha polls: How BJP's closeness with Chirag Paswan fractured NDA coalition in Bihar
Pashupati Paras claimed injustice to his party and said, "Yesterday, the NDA alliance announced the list of 40 candidates for Bihar Lok Sabha...Our party had five MPs & I worked with utmost sincerity...Injustice has been done with us and our party. Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister." The rift in the Bihar NDA started showing when Pashupati Paswan hinted at going solo in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, declaring that the existing MLAs of his party will recontest from their seats. However, speculation is rife that smelling the RLJP's sidelining, some of his MLAs are allegedly actively pursuing pre-poll deals with other parties.
