Ukraine clarifies on ‘intellectual potential’ remark, acknowledges 'global roles' of India, China
Also read: Ukrainian official says India has 'weak intellectual potential’, 'doesn't fully understand...' “Of course, Turkey, India, China, and other regional powers are increasingly and clearly justified in claiming global roles in the modern world - and there are all the reasons for this: historical, economic, cultural, scientific, and political. And these roles have long been much more extensive than Russia’s. But the global world is much broader than even the most thoughtful regional national interests," Podolyak said.

Did Europe just start a trade war with China over electric cars?
European Union may have just sparked one of its biggest battles. With European officials fearing millions of auto jobs are at risk from China’s surging electric vehicle exports, the bloc’s executive arm on Wednesday launched an investigation into Beijing’s financial support for the EV industry. The probe, which could take up to nine months, will probably lead to new EU tariffs on Chinese EV imports and embroil major non-European automakers like Tesla Inc., which produce cars in China for export to the bloc. The move may lead to tariffs close to the 27.5% level already imposed by the US on Chinese EVs, according to a person familiar with the matter. The EU duties could vary depending on the producer, the person added, asking not to be identified as the discussions are private and no decision has been finalized. The bloc’s investigation, as well as aggressive moves by Washington to counter China, are part of a broader rethink by governments in developed economies to bring production closer to home, especially for key sectors like semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and heavy industries, which were disrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic. That drive to secure supply chains, combined with the tensions after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has resulted in a simultaneous rush to throw up trade barriers, triggering fears of a global economic fragmentation.Major Market If the EU does impose duties, that would curtail one of the last major markets for Chinese EV exports, and raises the prospect of a cascade of defensive moves in places like the UK to protect their markets being flooded by vehicles redirected from the EU. Shares of Chinese electric vehicle makers staged a mix performance Thursday with BYD Co Ltd.

"Won't hesitate to impose additional..:" US warns Russia, N Korea of more sanctions over arms deal
Russia and North Korea as Kim Jong Un arrived in Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin recently, giving rise to the concerns of a possible arms deal between the two countries, which has remained the talk of the town for quite sometime now. In a press briefing on Wednesday, the official spokesperson of the US Department of State, Matthew Miller said, «And then I want to speak specifically for a second about the idea of North Korea providing weapons to Russia, which I spoke to the other day but I don't think you were here. One, just the overall context, and one thing it's important to restate again, that a year and a half ago Vladimir Putin launched this war thinking he was going to restore the glory of the Russian empire, failed in all of his maximalist, imperialist aims, and now a year and a half later, after losing tens of thousands of Russian soldiers and spending billions and billions of dollars, here he is begging Kim Jong-un for help.» «So it says something about the overall context of how this war is going for Russia.

Oil prices tick up as markets zoom in on supply tightness
Oil prices edged higher on Thursday, after dipping slightly in the previous session, as markets refocused on expectations of tight crude supply for the rest of 2023. International benchmark Brent futures climbed 17 cents to $92.05 a barrel at 12:02 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) rose 19 cents to $88.71. Saudi Arabia and Russia's extension of oil output cuts to the end of 2023 will mean a substantial market deficit through the fourth quarter, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Wednesday, as it largely stuck by its estimates for demand growth this year and next. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Tuesday stuck to its forecasts for robust growth in global oil demand in 2023 and 2024. Both benchmarks climbed to 10-month highs on Wednesday before data showed a surprise build in U.S.

US will impose sanctions on Russia, North Korea for any new arms deals: State Dept
Biden administration «won't hesitate» to impose more sanctions on Russia and North Korea if they conclude any new arms deals, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller issued the warning at a briefing in response to questions about the meeting in Russia between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. «We have taken a number of actions already to sanction entities that brokered arms sales between North Korea and Russia and we won't hesitate to impose additional actions if appropriate,» Miller said. It was troubling that Russia and North Korea are discussing increased cooperation that could violate U.N.

Today’s world war on inflation is yielding no winners
Another month, another suspenseful inflation number. India’s 6.8% rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday was lower than expected because of slower-rising vegetable prices that however still jumped 26%. The US’s August inflation number released on Wednesday, meanwhile, disrupted the cheery view that the US economy is managing to avoid a recession while inflation does the Federal Reserve’s bidding without needing more interest rate hikes.

Putin welcomes India-Middle East-Europe connectivity project that would complement INSTC
Vladimir Putin has welcomed the India-Middle East-Europe connectivity initiative, emphasising its logistical advantages. Putin said the project would complement the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which would, in turn, benefit Moscow. “I believe that this will only benefit us. I believe that this will only help us develop logistics,” Putin said in his address to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Tuesday. The Russian president said the India-Middle East-Europe connectivity project would help his country develop logistics and added that the project had been under discussion for several years. Putin, however, chided the US over its participation.
