In big win for PM Modi's global south push, African Union joins G20
African Union (AU) Saturday formally took its seat as a new member of the G20 at the invitation of summit host Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his inaugural address at the summit, Modi also expressed solidarity with Morocco as it grapples with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and extended all the support that Rabat needs. In 2015, India had played a key role in Morocco's reinduction into the AU. The current chair of the 55-member AU is the Comoros President, who was greeted by Modi following the announcement.

The great Indian diplomacy: G20 unanimously adopts Delhi Declaration
G20 adopted the New Delhi Declaration unanimously on Saturday, calling for coordinated steps to support the world economy that faces an uncertain outlook, along with expeditious and effective redressal of the debt vulnerabilities of low and middle-income countries. The declaration marked a significant diplomatic success for India's presidency in the face of divisions that had cropped up, especially over the Ukraine war. In the 83-paragraph declaration, the India-led G20 proposed scaling up inclusive action against climate change with a green development pact and sustainable development goals, admitted the African Union in the group, put crypto-asset regulation on the global agenda, and committed to reforming multilateral development banks (MDBs). There were widespread fears the summit may end without a declaration due to divergence over the Ukraine-Russia conflict that shadowed all ministerial meetings before the Leaders' Summit. «History has been created with the adoption of the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration,» said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media site X.

India used Sherpa, ministerial tracks to reach consensus on Delhi Declaration
Ukraine-Russia war. A consensus that had seemed elusive was achieved following hard bargaining and intense discussions among all G20 negotiating teams amid key meetings, ET has learnt. The need for consensus on the New Delhi Declaration that was adopted on Saturday had also figured in the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the Capital on Friday night. While India was in constant touch with Russia over the issue, external affairs minister S Jaishankar's meeting with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Jakarta played an important role, ET has learnt. Over Friday and early Saturday, the Prime Minister held critical talks on the issue with visiting leaders.

G20 Leadership Summit: Prime Minister Modi calls for end to global trust deficit
Modi Saturday called upon the world community to end the "global trust deficit", saying it was «the time to walk together» as he sought to cast India's presidency of G20 as a stepping stone to the peaceful emergence of a new world order based on mutual trust and universal brotherhood bereft of East-West or North-South divide. Addressing heads of states in the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Leadership Summit in the national capital, Modi exuded optimism that if nations could beat the pandemic by sticking together, they can very well bridge the surge in trust deficit in the wake of the Ukraine war. The Prime Minister also called on the President of the African Union to take a seat among the G20 leaders after they endorsed India's proposal to include the bloc as a permanent member of the grouping. India's proposal was in sync with the principle of togetherness, Modi added. With a miniature Tricolour on his right and the «Bharat» (instead of India) name plank in front of him, the Prime Minister said in Hindi: «Today, Bharat, as the G20 President, calls on the world to first unitedly convert this global trust deficit into confidence and trust.

G20 leaders for inclusive growth, flag $4 trillion a year needed for clean energy tech
G20 leaders on Saturday called for a strong, sustainable, and inclusive growth as an answer to the uneven recovery the world has seen from the pandemic-infused plunder, and flagged trillions of dollar that countries would need to meet their climate goals and clean energy technologies. The New Delhi Declaration adopted at the Summit of leaders of the world's top 20 economies held under India's presidency also called for reforming of international financial institutions, managing debt vulnerabilities of low and middle-income countries and the start of exchange of tax-relevant information on crypto assets by 2027. The declaration called for accelerating efforts to phase down unabated coal power, phase-out of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies and low-cost financing for energy transition of developing countries. While developing countries need USD 5.8-5.9 trillion in the pre-2030 period for their climate goals, the world would need another USD 4 trillion per annum investment by 2030 to help reach net-zero carbon emission goal by 2050. Stating that cascading crises have posed challenges to long-term growth, the declaration called for well calibrated macroeconomic and structural policies to counter the challenge of an uneven recovery, and boost long-term growth.

G20 Summit: Global leaders decries 'use of force' in Ukraine for 'territorial' gain in Delhi Declaration
AFP. Referencing the 'war in Ukraine', the New Delhi Leaders Summit Declaration said that 'all states' should 'refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state'. Unlike in a G20 statement in Bali last year, there was no explicit reference to Russia in the Delhi Declaration. In 2022, a UN resolution condemned in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
