markets President Experts Justice Department Investigations Trump pick Kash Patel must prove he'll restore public faith in the FBI, a leading GOP senator says
Donald Trump's drive to upend the FBI was welcomed by Republican senators although it was not clear on Sunday how strongly members of the incoming majority party would embrace his move to install ally Kash Patel as the next director of the Justice Department's top investigative arm. Patel, a onetime national security prosecutor who is aligned with the president-elect's rhetoric about a «deep state,» «must prove to Congress he will reform & restore public trust in FBI,» said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, in line to be the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman when Republicans take control in January, in a post on X. Patel lacks the high-level legal and management experience that FBI directors, including Robert Mueller, James Comey and Christopher Wray, who now holds that job, had before their nominations. It's a 10-year term, and Trump named Wray in 2017 after firing Comey. So Trump's announcement late Saturday means Wray must either resign or be fired after Trump takes office on Jan. 20, 2025.

Citi Fighting security Strategy War Inside Syria's second city slips from government control: Monitor
Syria's second-largest city Aleppo has fallen from government control for the first time since the country's conflict began more than a decade ago, a war monitor said Sunday, after a surprise advance by rebels. An Islamist-dominated rebel alliance has pressed a lightning offensive against forces of the Iranian- and Russian-backed Syrian government since Wednesday, the same day a fragile ceasefire took effect in neighbouring Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group after two months of all-out war. The Syrian army — supported by Russian air power — had recaptured in 2016 rebel-held areas of Aleppo, a city dominated by its landmark citadel.

Donald Trump, the US President-elect, has appointed Kashyap 'Kash' Patel as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). markets economy Trade War country consequences Pharmaceuticals Donald Trump's 100% BRICS Tariff threats: How India could be affected in a renewed trade war
Donald Trump prepares for his second term as US President, his aggressive trade stance is already creating ripples in the global economy. A key element of his protectionist policies is the threat of imposing 100% tariffs on BRICS countries, including India, if they move away from using the US dollar in international transactions. This bold stance, declared through a scathing social media post, could have severe consequences for India’s exports, particularly in critical sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and information technology. Trump’s remarks come in response to discussions among BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, regarding the possibility of reducing their reliance on the US dollar for trade. A summit held in Russia in October focused on increasing local currency transactions, a move that Trump has now vowed to challenge. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote, warning that any country attempting to replace the dollar with another currency would face significant tariff hikes. markets President War Sky News stage country reports Zelenskyy says NATO offer for Ukraine-controlled territory could end 'hot stage' of war
Zelenskyy's remarks on Friday signaled a possible way forward to the difficult path Ukraine faces to future NATO membership. At their summit in Washington in July, the 32 members declared Ukraine on an «irreversible» path to membership. However, one obstacle to moving forward has been the view that Ukraine's borders would need to be clearly demarcated before it could join so that there can be no mistaking where the alliance's pact of mutual defense would come into effect. «You can't give an invitation to just one part of a country,» the Ukrainian president said in an excerpt of the interview with Sky News, dubbed by the UK broadcaster. «Why? Because thus you would recognize that Ukraine is only that territory of Ukraine and the other one is Russia.»
