Asia’s manufacturing slump worsens as China curbs demand
Manufacturing activity in Asia’s major export powerhouses slumped further in August as weak demand persisted in the region’s key trade markets, particularly in China. Factories in North Asia experienced weaker new orders, output and export sales, according to manufacturing purchasing managers’ surveys published Friday by S&P Global and au Jibun Bank. The purchasing managers’ index for trade bellwether Taiwan was little changed at a subdued level of 44.3 last month from 44.1 in July, while South Korea’s gauge slumped to 48.9 from 49.4 during the same period. Seoul reported a similarly gloomy reading on industrial production on Thursday, showing a bigger-than-expected drop in July, marking its longest stretch of output decline yet. Japan’s PMI was unchanged at 49.6, below the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction.Southeast Asia, which until recently was a bright spot, showed the weak sentiment was rubbing off on factories in the region.

Two FPIs linked to Adani Group acted as fronts for promoters, says OCCRP
OCCRP, a global collective of investigative journalists backed by billionaire George Soros and others, on Thursday said it has uncovered a trail of financial transactions to show that Adani Group promoters indulged in share price manipulation of at least four group company stocks via undisclosed related entities. In its report, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) alleged that two overseas funds, or foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), that invested extensively in Adani stocks during 2013-18 acted as «fronts» for the group's promoters.Recycled Allegations: Adani OCCRP also said they were managed by individuals who are former associates of Adani Group. «Nasser Ali Shaban Ahli from Taiwan and Chang Chung-Ling from the United Arab Emirates, both with longstanding business ties to the Adani family, who have also served as directors and shareholders in Adani Group companies and related Vinod Adani-associated firms, used the funds to trade large amounts of shares in four Adani companies between 2013 and 2018,» the collective's report said. «In March 2017, the value of these investments in Adani Group stock was $430 million.

China objects to former Indian service chiefs attending security conference in Taiwan
China on Thursday said it firmly opposed all forms of official interaction between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with Beijing. Responding to a question raised by a Pakistani journalist on reports that three former top Indian military officials attended a security dialogue held by Taiwanese authorities in Taipei this month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that China firmly opposes all forms of official interaction with Taiwan. China, which considers self-ruled Taiwan as part of its mainland, routinely objects to any high-level visits to Taipei, saying that it is a violation of the one-China principle. According to the media reports, Admiral Karambir Singh, General M M Naravane and Chief of Air Staff R K S Bhadauria — the former Navy, Army and Indian Air Force chiefs respectively — recently attended Ketagalan Forum's 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue held in Taiwan. Answering a question on their attendance, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang said, «China firmly opposes all forms of official interaction between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with China.» «This is our consistent and clear position.

Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan join India in rejecting China's new map
India in rejecting China's new national map, issuing strongly worded statements accusing Beijing of claiming their territory. China published a new version of its national map on Monday to correct what Beijing has in the past referred to as «problematic maps» that it claims misrepresent its territorial borders. India on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with China over its so-called «standard map» laying claim over Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin, and asserted that such steps only complicate the resolution of the boundary question. The External Affairs Ministry also rejected China's claims as having «no basis». «Just making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours,» External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said while reacting to the Chinese move. The Philippine government on Thursday slammed China's 2023 edition of its so-called «standard map» that still shows swaths of Philippine features in the West Philippine Sea. The Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources issued on August 28 a controversial map that includes the nine-dash line, now a 10-dash line, that supposedly shows China's boundaries in the South China Sea. «This latest attempt to legitimise China's purported sovereignty and jurisdiction over Philippine features and maritime zones has no basis under international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),» Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ma.

US restricts exports of some Nvidia chips to Middle East countries
Nvidia artificial intelligence chip exports to certain countries in the Middle East, the company said in a regulatory filing this week. «During the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, the USG (US government) informed us of an additional licensing requirement for a subset of A100 and H100 products destined to certain customers and other regions, including some countries in the Middle East,» Nvidia said in the filing. One year ago Nvidia said US officials told it to stop exporting the same two computing chips for AI work to China. The move was seen as potentially slowing Chinese firms' ability to carry out advanced work like image recognition. The announcement also signaled at that time a major escalation of the US crackdown on China's technological capabilities as tensions bubble over the fate of Taiwan, where chips for Nvidia and almost every other major chip firm are manufactured. The securities filing, posted Aug.

Arunachal Pradesh MLA writes to PM Modi; urges to raise map issue with Xi Jinping at G20 Summit
China released its standard map that included India's Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, Congress MLA, Ninong Ering has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to raise the issue of People's Republic of China's aggression in the scheduled G20 Summit in Delhi on September 9-10. In his letter to the PM on Tuesday, the Congress leader said that the 'deliberate incident' on the part of the PRC has invoked deep resentment among the people of Arunachal Pradesh. «This unforeseen, unfortunate yet deliberate incident on the part of PRC has invoked deep resentment among the people of Arunachal Pradesh, it is in common knowledge that the PRC has earlier too tried to assert its claim over Arunachal Pradesh by renaming 11 locations in April 2023, 15 locations in 2021 and 6 places in 2017,» Ering said. The Congress MLA who represents the Pashighat-west seat, a constituency bordering the Chinese-controlled Tibet Autonomous Region, in the Arunachal Pradesh legislative assembly, said that the recent release of the 'PRC Standard Map' is a culmination of their nefarious plans and a matter of importance since Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and has scarred memories of the 1962 Sino-Indian war. In his letter, he also mentioned the Galwan Valley clash between the troops of India and China. «As you know, India is engaged in combat with an aggressive PRC along the Indo-Tibetan border in the Himalayas and 20 of Indian Army personnel gave their lives while defending India's frontiers against the PLA in Galwan Valley in 2020. Prior to this, you have emphasized that no one can seize an inch of India's land.
