China sends aircraft and vessels toward Taiwan days after US approves USD 500-million arms sale
Taiwan's defence ministry said Saturday that China sent dozens of aircraft and vessels toward the island, just days after the United States approved $500-million arms sale to Taiwan. The defence ministry said in a statement that 32 aircraft from the People's Liberation Army and nine vessels from the navy were detected in the 24 hours between 6 am Friday and 6 am Saturday. Of these, 20 aircraft either crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or breached Taiwan's air defense identification zone. In response, Taiwan tasked its own aircraft, vessels and missile systems to respond to the activities, the defense military said. China sees self-ruled Taiwan as a renegade province to be taken by force if necessary.

Meta faces backlash over Canada news block as wildfires rage
Meta is being accused of endangering lives by blocking news links in Canada at a crucial moment, when thousands have fled their homes and are desperate for wildfire updates that once would have been shared widely on Facebook. The situation «is dangerous,» said Kelsey Worth, 35, of one nearly 20,000 residents of Yellowkife and thousands more in small towns ordered to evacuate the Northwest Territories as wildfires advanced. She described to AFP how «insanely difficult» it has been for herself and other evacuees to find verifiable information about the fires blazing across the near-Arctic territory and other parts of Canada. «Nobody's able to know what's true or not,» she said. «And when you're in an emergency situation, time is of the essence,» she said, explaining that many Canadians until now have relied on social media for news. Meta on August 1 started blocking the distribution of news links and articles on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in response to a recent law requiring digital giants to pay publishers for news content. The company has been in a virtual showdown with Ottawa over the bill passed in June but which only takes effect next year. Building on similar legislation introduced in Australia, the bill aims to support a struggling Canadian news sector that has seen a flight of advertising dollars and hundreds of publications closed in the last decade. It requires companies like Meta and Google to make fair commercial deals with Canadian outlets for the news and information — estimated in a report to parliament to be worth Can$330 million (US$250 million) per year — that is shared on their platforms, or face binding arbitration. But Meta has said the bill is flawed and insisted that news outlets share

Singapore ready for non-Chinese PM, says presidential candidate Tharman
Singapore is ready for a non-Chinese prime minister at any time, presidential candidate Tharman Shanmugaratnam has said ahead of the September 1 election, calling it a marker of the society's progress in the country dominated by Chinese-origin population. Race is a factor in politics everywhere, he said on Friday, citing former US president Barack Obama, who has spoken and written about it. However, Singaporeans today, unlike 40 or 50 years ago, look at all factors and not just race, said 66-year-old Tharman, a Singaporean of Indian origin. «They look at people in totality… Singapore is ready at any time.

London to New York in just 90 min? Nasa's special supersonic aircraft to reduce flight duration: Report
CNN Travel's report, US Space agency NASA has confirmed about “high-speed strategy" which will shrink the duration of New York-London flights to as little as 90 minutes. NASA is developing a supersonic aircraft, called X-59s, as part of its Quesst mission. Currently, passenger planes cruise at 600 mph but Nasa is exploring the possibility of designing a commercially viable and economical supersonic jet that would travel between Mach 2 and Mach 4 (1,535-3,045 mph).

Korean Air to weigh passengers on domestic, international flights
Korean Air has announced its compliance with aviation regulations by introducing passenger and carry-on luggage weight checks during the boarding process for both domestic and international flights. The airline's plan involves applying a standardized weight measurement to passengers, inclusive of their carry-on bags. According to a Korea Times report, this initiative will first be rolled out for domestic passengers at Gimpo International Airport from August 28 to September 6, followed by international passengers at Incheon International Airport from September 8 to September 19. The data collected from these checks will remain anonymous and will primarily serve safety operations purposes, ensuring adherence to proper weight distribution within the aircraft. Passengers who choose not to participate in these weight measurements can easily communicate their decision to the airline staff during the boarding process. This move aligns with the guidelines set out in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's «Aircraft Weight and Balance Management Standards,» which necessitate airlines to periodically measure passenger standard weights to establish accurate weight and balance calculations for aircraft. While the weight standards were determined at 81 kg for adult males and 69 kg for adult females in a local 2017 survey, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prescribes slightly higher figures of 88.4 kg for adult males and 70.3 kg for adult females.
