US approves maternal vaccine to prevent RSV in infants
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in their babies. The Pfizer shot, which was already approved for use in older adults, has now been greenlighted for use as a single injection from 32 through 36 weeks of pregnancy, to protect infants from birth through six months, a statement by the Food and Drug Administration said. It is the latest in a succession of medicines recently approved against the common microbe, which causes tens of thousands of hospitalizations among infants and the elderly in the United States every year, according to official estimates. Researchers have targeted an RSV vaccine since the 1960s, but the spate of shots that are emerging now were made possible thanks to a scientific breakthrough a decade ago. «RSV is a common cause of illness in children, and infants are among those at highest risk for severe disease, which can lead to hospitalization,» said Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. «This approval provides an option for healthcare providers and pregnant individuals to protect infants from this potentially life-threatening disease.» The approval follows a clinical trial involving some 7,000 pregnant women, which showed Pfizer's vaccine, called Abrysvo, reduced severe disease caused by RSV by 82 percent in babies from 0-3 months, and 69 percent from 0-6 months. Abrysvo was previously approved by the FDA for adults aged 60 and over, as was another vaccine by drugmaker GSK, called Arexvy. While RSV most often causes mild, cold-like symptoms in infants and young children, it can also lead to more serious outcomes such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. An estimated 58,000-80,000 children younger than five years are hospitalized due to RSV infection, according to

IT midcaps set to keep hiring momentum going in near term
Persistent, LTTS, Coforge, and Happiest Minds expect headcount additions across laterals and freshers in the next few quarters after reporting positive revenue growth – although subdued – in the last quarter even as macroeconomic challenges persist. This is in contrast to large-cap IT firms that have reported weak numbers and are expecting a dip in headcount. While larger players are conserving resources and maintaining a cautious approach to hiring due to macroeconomic uncertainties, midcaps are focusing on bringing in more freshers to balance out employee costs. Happiest Minds plans to add around 1,300 to its workforce during the fiscal year while Persistent expects to onboard almost 800 freshers by December. Coforge management during its recent earnings call said out of the 1,000 people added during the first quarter, 200 were graduate engineer trainees. The company has reiterated its annual revenue growth guidance of 13-16% in constant currency terms despite deferrals in deal closures. Coforge has also seen healthy growth in the US in the last quarter of around 5.6% despite an unfavourable economic environment there. “So, at this point in time, given how big the tech services market in the US is, and how small we are in relative terms, we still see clear opportunities in the market,” Coforge chief executive Sudhir Singh told ET. The company has built a solid bench strength of employees to service some of the large deals it has won, he said. Persistent reported in-line numbers during the April-June quarter, led by strong growth across the top client base and marquee deals.

FPIs trim government bond holdings on rising global rate concerns
bond investors have been cutting down exposure to some of their most widely held long-term Indian government bonds amid a deepening rout in international fixed-income markets and the strengthening belief that interest rates would remain higher for longer. In the fully accessible route (FAR) for government securities, the aggregate holding of foreign investors in their most favoured long-term bond has fallen by ₹1,192.6 crore over the past couple of months even as investment in other securities has remained broadly steady. As on August 18, the aggregate holding of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in the 7.26%, 2032 government bond — an erstwhile 10-year benchmark security — accounts for 5.37% of the bond's outstanding stock of ₹1.48 lakh crore, down from 6.17% on June 19, Clearing Corporation of India data showed. The 7.26%, 2032 bond is one of the three most widely held bonds by FPIs in the FAR category, which does not have any limits on foreign investment. Longer-term securities pose a greater degree of risk on bond portfolios. Overall foreign portfolio investment in the general category for central government securities has also dwindled, having fallen by ₹5,790 crore so far in 2023. «On the FPI investments in fixed-income, given where the US interest rates are, any other fixed-income market is not looking that attractive right now.

MNC dividends pour post scrapping of distribution tax
companies (MNCs) or firms with high foreign holdings have been doling out liberal dividends since the removal of the dividend distribution tax (DDT) in April 2020. Tax experts and market participants said the scrapping of DDT, which results in dividend income getting taxed in the hands of the recipient or the shareholder, has made such payouts a more tax-friendly way of distributing cash for the MNCs. In FY23, the dividend earned by foreign promoters and other overseas investors was nearly ₹1.24 lakh crore compared to ₹53,600 crore in FY20 or ₹53,500 crore in FY19. Till FY20, companies were required to pay Dividend Distribution Tax at an effective rate of 20.56%.
