Union home ministry has directed all central paramilitary and allied forces to replicate a 'beehives on border fence' beekeeping model initiated by a BSF unit in West Bengal to boost employment opportunities for the locals and create a goodwill with them for strengthening security. Official sources told PTI that the decision was made during a meeting on «scientific beekeeping and honey mission» that was chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla at his office at North Block here in April. The model devised and implemented by the 32nd battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed to guard the India-Bangladesh international border in West Bengal's Nadia district was «lauded» during the meeting and a direction was issued to all the central armed police forces (CAPFs) to adopt it in their respective areas of responsibility, a senior CAPF officer said. The other border guarding forces, such as the Sashastra Seema Bal (Nepal and Bhutan borders) and the Indo Tibetan Border Police (China LAC), CAPFs like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other forces like Assam Rifles, the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) do not have fences to guard but the model can be utilised by them as per their nature of duties, the officer said.

Election Commission of India on Friday held a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs to take stock of security requirements for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar and election commissioner Arun Goel held a meeting with Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla to discuss deployment of central forces for the general elections. It is gathered that officials from the Ministry of Railways were also part of the deliberations in order to plan smooth movement of central forces across the country. The discussions come just ahead of the commission members' visit to Jammu & Kashmir next week. The deliberations will help in scheduling Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the Union Territory. Kumar and Goel are scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir on March 12-13.

India and the United States are expected to hold the Homeland Security Dialogue on February 28, 2024, officials have said. Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla will lead the talks with his US counterpart. The two sides are expected to discuss cooperation in counterterrorism, cyber security, illegal mobility, extradition, aviation security, global supply chain and maritime security among others. The homeland security dialogue was last held in January 2022. According to North Block officials, senior officers from the two sides will participate in the day-long meeting. India is expected to hand over a list of more than 100 fugitives wanted by law enforcement agencies who have taken shelter in the US, according to those familiar with the details. New Delhi is likely to raise the use of digital space and how it is being exploited by terrorist groups for propagating radical views, recruitment and funding terrorism. The drug seizures by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will be shared by the Indian side seeking cooperation from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). NCB recently seized drugs worth ₹75 crore following inputs from the US DEA. The mastermind behind an international drug cartel was identified as a Tamil film producer, who is on the run.

Court can't ask for communication between ministers, prez in proposed law: MHA to Panel
home ministry is learnt to have informed a parliamentary panel looking into the new three bills seeking to reform the criminal laws, that a provision has been added in the Evidence Act that no court shall require any privileged communication between the ministers and the President of India to be produced before it. These details were shared with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, which is examining the three bills which seek to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Evidence Act, with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bills, respectively. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla made a detailed presentation on various aspects of the proposed legislation. His presentation will continue for two more days (Friday and Saturday). In the second week of September, members are likely to get two days to seek clarification from the home secretary. Home Minister Amit Shah had introduced the three bills –– the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill –– in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon session, and the House had referred them to the standing committee. The ministry has informed the panel that it has proposed a provision in the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, which will be replaced with Bharatiya Sakshya Bill that no court shall require privileged communication between ministers and the President of India to be produced before it, sources said.
