Manipur CM Biren Singh quits amid rumblings within state BJP
Nongthombam Biren Singh resigned as Manipur chief minister on Sunday. A section of BJP leaders and Kuki organisations have been demanding his removal, blaming him for the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023. They have made it clear that there cannot be any talks as long as Biren Singh was CM.

He submitted his registration to governor Ajay Bhalla, who has asked Biren Singh to continue as the caretaker CM. The 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, set to commence from February 10, has been declared «null and void» with immediate effect, as per a notice issued by assembly secretary K Meghajit Singh.
Speaker Th Satyabrata, ministers Th Bishwajit and Y Khemchand are probable candidates for the chief minister's post.
Earlier this week, a new controversy erupted after the Supreme Court sought a sealed-cover forensic report on the authenticity of leaked audio clips alleging the role of Singh in the ethnic violence.
The tapes reportedly included conversations where Singh allegedly suggested that Meitei groups were allowed to loot arms and ammunition from the state government during the unrest, which has so far claimed 250 lives.
