Putin, Kim gifted each other rifles, Putin to visit North Korea
Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung Un gifted each other rifles when they met in Far Eastern Russia, the Kremlin said on Thursday, confirming the isolated Russian leader will visit North Korea as Moscow woos another pariah state. The Russian president, who has sought to strengthen alliances with other hardline leaders ostracised by the West, met with Kim on Wednesday amid speculation they would agree on an arms deal. Russia is eager for ammunition to continue fighting in Ukraine, while North Korea wants Moscow's help to develop its missile programme. Putin «gave (Kim) a rifle from our production of the highest quality. In return, he also received a North Korean-made rifle,» Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Putin also gifted the North Korean leader a «glove from a space suit that has been to space several times.» Kim, who seldom leaves his country, held talks with Putin at the Vostochny cosmodrome.

Vladimir Putin to comment on 2024 election bid by end of year
Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he will only comment on whether he will run for re-election in 2024 after the ballot is officially announced later this year. Putin has led Russia since the turn of the century, winning four presidential elections and briefly serving as prime minister in a system where political opposition has become virtually non-existent. «According to the law, parliament must make a decision at the end of the year,» Putin told the audience at the Eastern Economic Forum in the Pacific port of Vladivostok. «When the elections are announced, when the date is set, then we will talk about it,» he added. Presidential elections in Russia are officially set by parliament and held every six years, after the term limit was lengthened from four years previously.

SEOUL—As North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to Russia, he likely did so in the preferred manner of Pyongyang’s ruling family: cloaked in secrecy, self-protection and style. Kim, the third-generation dictator, plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, state media from both countries said on Monday—the first official confirmation of the summit between the two leaders. The reports didn’t specify when or where specifically the exchange will take place.

Russia sticks to demands on Black Sea grain deal, rejects UN bank proposal
Russia said on Saturday it was sticking to its conditions for a return to the Black Sea grain deal which it quit in July. In particular, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia needed its state agricultural bank — and not a subsidiary of the bank, as proposed by the United Nations — to be reconnected to the international SWIFT bank payments system. «All our conditions are perfectly well known. They do not need interpretation, they are absolutely concrete and all this is absolutely achievable,» Peskov said. «Therefore Russia maintains its responsible, clear and consistent position, which has been repeatedly voiced by the president.» The Black Sea deal was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022 to enable Ukraine to export grain by sea despite the war and help ease a global food crisis. It was accompanied by an agreement to facilitate Russia's own exports of food and fertiliser, which Moscow says has not been fulfilled.

Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan to meet amid grain deal hopes
Vladimir Putin will host his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday, the Kremlin said, amid hopes the two can restore a deal ensuring safe passage for grain shipments. Russia pulled out from the UN-backed grain agreement that Turkey helped broker in July, effectively revoking safe navigation for civilian ships sailing through the Black Sea. «Negotiations will indeed take place in Sochi on Monday,» Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday. Moscow's announcement came shortly after Ukraine said two more ships were sailing through a temporary corridor Kyiv had set up to ensure safe navigation. «Two vessels are sailing through a temporary corridor from Ukraine's Black Sea ports to the Bosphorus,» Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said on social media.

Modi-Putin discuss bilateral ties & Brics; Russia to send its foreign minister to G20 Summit
Putin held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The two leaders reviewed progress on a number of issues of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including space cooperation and an upcoming summit of the G20, the PMO said in a statement released on the same. President Putin also conveyed his inability to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9–10, 2023, and informed that Russia would be represented by the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, the PMO further said. The two leaders took part in a summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies in South Africa last week, Modi in person and Putin by video link. Last week on Saturday, the Press Secretary to the Russian President Dmitry Peskov had informed the Russian media that President Vladimir Putin will not participate in the G20 leaders’ summit to be held in New Delhi. These developments are in line with other recent international summits held after the beginning of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022, where Putin has remained absent. The International Criminal Court (ICC) had earlier in March issued an arrest warrant for Putin and another Russian official.
