Mallory McMorrow has announced her candidacy for the US Senate seat, currently held by Democrat Gary Peters. Senator Peters is set to retire in 2026. The 38-year-old Democrat has become the first prominent candidate to formally enter the race. Her entry has set the stage for what is expected to be one of the most competitive and expensive senate battlers of the midterms. McMorrow, who represents a suburban Detroit district, positioned herself as a fresh alternative to the Democratic Party’s current leadership, the reports stated. The politician, in her campaign launch video, called for a ‘new generation of leadership’. She also criticised party veterans for their failure to offer a clear plan to counter President Donald Trump’s influence.

Pete Buttigieg is reportedly giving a “serious look” at contesting the Senate seat for Michigan, which is set to become vacant following the retirement of incumbent Senator Gary Peters, stated Axios, citing sources, on Tuesday. This development came hours after a surprise announcement by the 66-year-old serving Senator, who revealed that he would not seek re-election next year.

Gary Peters announced on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in 2026, leaving an open seat in Michigan, a battleground state that President Donald Trump won by a narrow margin in 2024. The Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
