US to send more senior delegation to China military forum
Taiwan and Mongolia, to China's top annual security forum in mid-September, a U.S. official told Reuters. The choice of Chase has not been previously reported. He is more senior than the U.S. officer who attended the Xiangshan Forum last year, a sign that the U.S. military is hoping for deeper working-level engagement with China amid regional disputes and increased deployments across East Asia. More than 90 countries and international organisations plan to send delegations to the Sept. 12-14 forum in Beijing, Chinese state media reported Wednesday.

Chinese leader Xi meets with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan in a bid to improve ties
Beijing, on a visit with the stated aim of keeping communications open between the two powers, as the relationship between China and the United States has become increasingly tense in recent years. Sullivan, on his first trip to China in his capacity as the main adviser to President Joe Biden on U.S. national security issues, has met with senior Chinese officials including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and a senior general of the Central Military Commission. China and the U.S. have become increasingly at odds over various issues, starting with a trade war dating back to 2018, and which now encompasses global security matters, such as China's claims over the South China Sea, and industrial policy on things like automobile and solar panel manufacturing. Sullivan's trip this week is meant to keep the tensions from growing further.

U.S. sees 'limited' opportunity for talks with China on nuclear arms
United States is pushing China to break a longstanding resistance to nuclear arms talks, seeing a «limited opportunity» for early two-way conversations on the superpowers' approach to the issue, a senior Biden administration official said. The renewed U.S. push for nuclear talks comes as U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met top Chinese officials in Beijing to try and resolve gaping differences on a broad range of issues. «We saw some limited opportunity to open, at least the beginnings of conversation on the subject in the last months, but it's been fits and starts, and I think it will continue to be fits and starts,» said the official, who sought anonymity because the matter is a sensitive one.

Conversation with India on Pannun assassination plot has been respectful and effective, says US NSA
India regarding the allegations of a plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist in the US that involved an Indian government official has been «respectful» and «effective» because it's being held behind closed doors, according to Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor to the US president. In November last year, US federal prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with working with an Indian government employee in the foiled plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Gupta, who was arrested in the Czech Republic in June last year, was extradited to the US on June 14. «We have had a constructive dialogue with India on this issue. And we have made it very clear where we stand on it and what we would like to see. And it's been respectful, and it has been effective, in my view, mostly because it is taking place behind closed doors,» Sullivan said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado on Friday responding to a question on allegations related to the assassination attempt on Pannun. India has denied the allegations but has constituted an internal investigations team to look into it.

Joe Biden to address the nation on Trump's shooting as he works to balance politics with calls for unity
Joe Biden is to address the nation Sunday afternoon after a Situation Room briefing about the apparent assassination attempt on his predecessor, Donald Trump. The announcement of Biden's planned remarks came after homeland security and law enforcement officials briefed Biden, and the White House continued to call for national unity and condemn the stunning act of violence. Vice President Kamala Harris joined Biden for an update from top investigators, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray. Also participating were White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Kim Cheatle, director of the US Secret Service. Biden quickly denounced the shooting and talked to Trump on Saturday night. His campaign team, meanwhile, is grappling with how to manage the political implications of an attack on the man who Biden hopes to defeat in the November election.

Ukraine can hit Russian forces "anywhere" using US-supplied arms
Ukraine that it can use American-supplied weapons to hit Russian forces «anywhere». They can hit any Russian forces attacking from across the border, and not just the region near Kharkiv, Politico reported, citing US officials. This subtle shift, which according to the officials is not a change in policy, comes weeks after the US quietly signaled the green light to Kyiv to strike inside Russia in retaliation to a cross-border assault on the city of Kharkiv. During that time, the US officials stressed that the policy was limited to the Kharkiv region, among other restrictions.
