Marco Rubio tells NATO that US committed to alliance; says it must be ‘stronger’
Marco Rubio has assured NATO allies that Washington is committed to the alliance, despite concerns raised by President Donald Trump’s earlier remarks. Speaking at a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Rubio said that the United States seeks a stronger and more capable NATO. Rubio, as per the reports, said that the US is as active in NATO as it has ever been. He dismissed alleged hysteria and hyperbole in the media over Trump’s stance on the alliance. Rubio said that Trump has made it clear that the US supports NATO and they will remain a part of the organisation. However, Rubio reiterated Trump’s call for NATO allies to shoulder more responsibility. He, as per the Euro News report, urged European nations and Canada to increase their defence spending to five per cent of GDP. This reportedly is double of the current two per cent target which several nations including Belgium, Italy, and Spain fail to meet. France's Marine Le Pen found guilty in graft trial, awaits decision on potential ban from politics
Marine Le Pen guilty on Monday of misappropriating EU funds and the sentencing expected shortly could see her barred from the 2027 presidential race, upending politics in France. Le Pen, head of the far-right National Rally (RN), is the front-runner in opinion polls ahead of the 2027 vote. Prosecutors had asked that Le Pen face an immediate five-year ban from public office if found guilty, regardless of any appeal process, using a so-called «provisional execution» measure. Judges can adopt, modify or ignore the prosecutors' request. An automatic five-year ban would hammer Le Pen, 56, a three-time presidential contender who has said 2027 will be her final run for top office. She would retain her parliamentary seat until the end of her mandate. Le Pen, who did not speak to reporters as she arrived in court, has accused prosecutors of seeking her «political death», alleging a plot to keep the RN from power that echoes claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump about his legal woes.

Battle for the global elite: Paris and London’s wealth loss is Dubai’s gain
Paris. Cafes are bustling, the economy is showing signs of improvement and a shiny (stair-free) metro expansion is making the 15-minute city even more accessible. Yet there’s also the faintly audible sound of wealth on the move: Two locals inform me of plans to leave, one to Dubai and the other to Switzerland. In a similar vein to London’s fleeing non-doms and Brexit banking exiles, Paris is going through its own dose of ras-le-bol fiscal — the moment when the proverbial tax straw breaks the camel’s back — in President Emmanuel Macron’s twilight years. Taxes are going up on big business and the wealthy; Marine Le Pen is the presidential contender to beat in 2027; parliament is gridlocked and still fighting over pension reforms that tore the country apart in 2023. After an extraordinary run for Paris as the euro area’s investment-banking hub of choice, with the number of French financiers on seven-figure salaries almost doubling in four years, hiring plans are being put on ice.

Charting the global economy: French government topples
Marine Le Pen teamed up with a left-wing coalition to topple the French government, pitching the country into a prolonged period of turbulence that’s likely to further unsettle investors. A majority of lawmakers in the National Assembly backed a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s three-month-old administration following a dispute over next year’s budget. It was the shortest tenure for a premier since France’s Fifth Republic was founded in 1958. In the US, job growth picked up in November, a month after employment was constrained by two hurricanes and a commercial aircraft machinists’ strike. The unemployment rate, however, rose as long-term joblessness reached an almost three-year high.

Far right leader battling for own survival: Marine Le Pen
Marine Le Pen displayed the influence she wields on France by toppling the government but she is also facing a trial that risks banishing her from politics for good. Le Pen, who took over the far-right mantle from her father Jean-Marie, has over the last decade sought to turn her National Rally (RN) party into an electable force, even if critics still accuse it of being inherently racist. The work of «dediabolisation» («de-demonisation») bore fruit in the snap legislative polls this summer, with the RN emerging as the largest single party in the National Assembly, although without the outright majority it had targeted.

Trial of Le Pen in France complicates far-right leader’s move to mainstream
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. PARIS : Marine Le Pen and dozens of other members of National Rally stand trial on Monday on charges of misusing European funds, a case that risks disrupting the French politician’s efforts to carry her far-right party into the political mainstream. French prosecutors allege Le Pen and other National Rally leaders used close to 7 million euros—or around $7.8 million earmarked for assistants working inside the Strasbourg-based European Parliament—to pay party staffers in other parts of France between 2004 and 2017.

French leftists win most seats in elections, pollsters say; lack of majority threatens turmoil
Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance in second and the far right in third. The lack of majority for any single alliance threatened to plunge France into political and economic turmoil. Final results are not expected until late Sunday or early Monday in the highly volatile snap election, which was called just four weeks ago in a huge gamble for Macron. It does not appear to have paid off for the deeply unpopular president, whose alliance has lost control of parliament, according to the projections. Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally greatly increased the number of seats it holds, meanwhile, but fell far short of expectations. Far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon urged Macron to invite the leftist New Popular Front coalition to form a government, given projections that put it in the lead. The alliance, he said, «is ready to govern.»

In France, investors get the centrist limbo they wanted
When it comes to France’s turbulent politics, the current impasse is probably the best investors could have hoped for. The second round of French legislative elections delivered a widely expected hung parliament, but not its predicted makeup: Rather than coming in first, Marine Le Pen’s far-right and anti-immigrant National Rally finished third. In a shock twist, the leftist New Popular Front alliance emerged victorious, with the party of President Emmanuel Macron and its allies in second place.

Deeply divided France risks unprecedented deadlock after election shock
PARIS : France’s elections have produced a fractious parliament that threatens an unprecedented period of political paralysis, revealing a country that is deeply split along lines of class, geography and religion. No party came close to a majority, and the lawmakers elected Sunday are now grouped into blocs with profound differences. The New Popular Front, an alliance of leftist parties that won the most seats in parliament, is a diverse coalition whose most powerful faction is a polarizing, far-left party, France Unbowed.

How the far-right went from 1st to 3rd in France's election
National Rally (RN) has suffered a stinging defeat in the run-off round of France's parliamentary elections, hobbled by electoral pacts between the left and President Emmanuel Macron's centrists. Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella's RN led the first round of voting in the election on June 30 but fell back to third in Sunday's second round after the victorious left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) alliance and Macron's second-placed centrists joined forces to avoid splitting the anti-RN vote. The New Popular Front and its allies won 187 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly, Macron's centrist group won 159 seats and the National Rally and its allies won 142 seats, interior ministry figures show.
