UPS PM Mark Rutte quits over migration policy, Netherlands heads towards snap poll
Netherlands is heading towards a snap poll as Prime Minister Mark Rutte has resigned. He is expected to meet King Willem Alexander soon and advise him to dissolve the Parliament. The king may ask him to continue as the head of a caretaker government till a new government takes over. The longest-serving prime minister put up his papers after the talks on handling the immigrants with coalition partners failed. Emerging after the talks with other partners of the government, the prime minister announced that the differences over the handling of immigrants are ‘irreconcilable’. Talking to journalists after the meeting, the leader of the Peoples’ Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) announced that the coalition partners have very different views on migration policy. He also said that the parties came to the conclusion that those differences are ‘irreconcilable’. Rutte’s VVD and Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) want to adopt a stricter migration policy, while center-left Democrat 66 and Christian Union are in favor of a liberal policy. Rutte was in favor of tightening the curbing on reuniting the family members of asylum seekers and wanted to put the cap on the war refugees to 200 per month. But, Democrat 66 and Christian Union were against these measures. Rutte has earlier warned that he would topple the government if he was not allowed to implement his policies. The center-left and Christian parties opposed him in the meeting and the talks collapsed. Following this, the prime minister resigned. The parliamentary elections in the Netherlands are scheduled for 2023, but now the king is most likely to dissolve the government and order for snap polls.
