Global demand for explosives, ammunition leads to record defence exports
global demand for explosives and ammunition, fed by ongoing conflicts in Europe and West Asia, has resulted in record Indian defence exports, with the figure crossing ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25. Defence exports, which have been actively promoted by the government over the past decade, grew at over 12%, with strong demand for Indian manufactured explosives like TNT, RDX and HMX in the global market. Sources said that most Indian explosives and ammunition manufacturing capacity has been fully booked for the next three years, with at least five more plants coming up within the private sector in the coming months. State-owned defence public sector units have recorded a 42.8% surge in exports, reaching a high of ₹8,389 crore in the financial year.

Govt should immediately start decadal census, caste census: Kharge in RS
Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday asked the government to immediately start the decadal census as well as caste census, saying a large number of people are being left out of welfare schemes due to the delay. Expressing concern over the delay in conducting the decadal census during the Zero Hour in the House, the senior Congress leader said India has been conducting a census every 10 years since 1881. It was conducted even during wars, emergencies, or other crises. He recalled that back in 1931, a caste census was conducted along with the regular census. Right before the 1931 census, Mahatma Gandhi had said that just like 'we need periodic medical checkups to assess our health, a census is the most important checkup for a nation', Kharge stated. He said the census is a crucial exercise and involves a large number of people who collect data not just on population but also on employment, family structures, socio-economic conditions, and several other key aspects.

Markets end FY25 with 5% gains but investors wary of tariffs; H2 may be better
The current unease over the market outlook aside, money managers and analysts believe India's stock benchmarks will log gains in the second part of the fiscal year, with a likely rebound in local corporate earnings potentially encouraging foreign investors to return to D-Street. In the financial year that ended March 31, the Sensex and Nifty advanced around 5% each after posting gains of 28% in the previous fiscal. Both the indices, which were on a record-breaking run until the last week of September, gave up most of the gains following seemingly unrelenting sales by foreign institutions.

India dismisses NYT report on HAL re-routing sensitive tech to Russia, calls it 'factually incorrect and misleading'
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday strongly rejected a report published by The New York Times, calling it «factually incorrect and misleading.» Official sources stated that the report misrepresented facts and framed issues to suit a particular political narrative. Responding to allegations concerning Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned defence company, the MEA asserted that HAL has always complied with international rules on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments. «We (Ministry of External Affairs) have seen a report published by The New York Times. The said report is factually incorrect and misleading. It has tried to frame issues and distort facts to suit a political narrative. The Indian entity (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL) mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments,» MEA sources told news agency ANI. The ministry also highlighted India's strong legal and regulatory framework for strategic trade. It reaffirmed that all Indian companies conducting business overseas are guided by these regulations. «India’s robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade continues to guide overseas commercial ventures by its companies. We expect reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports, which obviously was overlooked in the instant case,» sources added.

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, 2026 West Bengal polls to loom large over Ram Navami festivities
political significance of Ram Navami celebrations in the state this year. What has traditionally been a religious occasion has morphed into a political battleground, as the ruling TMC and opposition BJP have engaged in a fierce contest over polarisation and counter-polarisation. The BJP, looking to consolidate Hindu votes ahead of next year's polls, has made Ram Navami a focal point of its campaign. Hindutva groups, including the VHP and the RSS, have set a target of mobilising over three crore people and taking out rallies in every block in West Bengal during the week-long celebrations starting on April 6. According to BJP leaders, these processions will serve as a symbolic protest against the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and what they described as the TMC's «appeasement politics.» «The attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are an eye-opener for those on this side of the border. If we don't resist now, Hindus in West Bengal may face a similar fate due to the TMC's appeasement policies,» state BJP president and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar told PTI.

Foreigners ditch stocks, deepen their India bond
Indian bonds surged to the highest in nearly a decade this financial year, mitigating the impact of sustained equity outflows barring the last ten days of March, as the country's inclusion in major international sovereign debt indices and North Block's robust fiscal discipline help expand the global market for local debt. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have pumped ₹1.43 lakh crore into Indian debt in FY25 — the highest ever recorded since FY15, showed data compiled by IndiaBonds.
