Gold will be king as long as there’s turmoil
On a rolling twelve-month basis, gold has surged nearly 37% to just shy of Friday's fresh lifetime record of $3,100 per troy ounce. It is extremely rare for any asset, including the hottest of stocks, to hit successive lifetime highs every third trading session. Gold has achieved that astonishing feat in 2025, building on the 30% plus gains last calendar year, as central banks and capital-protection funds continue to buy into the yellow metal.

Credit card spends drop to 8-month low of Rs 1.67 lakh cr in February
RBI) data showed, illustrating deceleration in the country’s discretionary spending through a month that coincides with the start of school board examinations in most parts of the country. This decline usage was also accompanied by a significant reduction in new credit card additions that nearly halved to 440,000 in February—from 820,000 in January. To be sure, India’s broadest equity gauges plunged through the first two months of 2025, before a late rearguard from overseas buyers through the last ten days of March helped the indices erase losses for the calendar year. Equity gains were often at the vanguard of big-ticket expenditures, particularly in the metros, through the first nine months of 2024.

FPIs show strong buying momentum in Indian equities in the second half of March
Indian equities in March for the third consecutive month but there was a sharp deceleration in the outflow due to strong buying in the second fortnight of the month. They invested net Rs 26,042 crore ($3,037 million) in the second half of March, a sharp contrast to the outflow of Rs 30,015 crore ($3,438 million) in the first fortnight. As a result, net outflow for the full month reduced to Rs 3,973 crore ($401.2 million). The extent of investment by foreign investors in the coming months will depend upon several factors including the tariff stance by the Trump administration and its impact on global trade, attractiveness of the Indian economy relative to the US, which is facing recessionary pressure and the valuation comfort of the domestic equities.

RR vs CSK Playing 11, IPL 2025: What is Royals' and Kings' head-to-head, who may feature in playing XI & more
Having lost their first two matches—against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders—RR will be eager to turn things around at their secondary home ground. Their batting has failed to fire so far, and a strong performance will be needed to avoid a third consecutive defeat. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings started their campaign with a win against Mumbai Indians but suffered a crushing loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk. That defeat, only their second-ever against RCB at home, has raised concerns about their bowling attack. However, the slower pitch in Guwahati might work in their favor, particularly for their spinners, as they look to bounce back strongly.

Post, protest, pack up: Indian students among those told to self-deport by US
international students in the US have received emails from the US State Department instructing them to self-deport due to alleged involvement in campus activism. Immigration attorneys confirmed to TOI's Lubna Kably that some Indian students are also among those affected, with actions as minor as sharing a social media post leading to visa revocations. This crackdown follows a directive from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which mandates social media reviews of both current international students and new applicants for student visas. Those found in violation face visa cancellations, making them ineligible to study in the US. Axios previously reported that this effort, powered by artificial intelligence, has resulted in the revocation of over 300 student visas. Affected students have been informed that their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records have been terminated, leaving them no grace period to stay in the country. The email states, «On behalf of the US Department of State, the Bureau of Consular Affairs Visa Office hereby informs you that additional information became available after your visa was issued. As a result, your F-1 visa with expiration date XXXXX was revoked in accordance with Section 221(i) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended.»

IPL 2025: DC look to sign off from Vishakhapatnam with perfect record when they take on SRH
Delhi Capitals registered a thrilling one-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants in their first match of IPL 2025 at Vishakhapatnam and will look to carry the momentum when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Sunday. In the first match, DC were reduced to 113/6 in the 13th over while chasing a challenging target of 210. However, debutant Vipraj Nigam, along with Ashutosh Sharma, stitched a vital 55-run partnership for the seventh wicket to turn the game in their favour. Reflecting on his match-winning partnership with Ashutosh Sharma, Nigam, who made quickfire 39 off 15 balls, said, «My job was to make things easy for Ashutosh. I was able to hit some shots which gave him more time to settle,» as quoted from a release by Delhi Capitals. «We both have played a lot of practice games together and have had some drills in the nets as well. Our plan was to try and replicate what we have been doing in the practice sessions. We did that, and fortunately, it worked for us,» the 20-year-old added while addressing media in a pre-match press conference. The young allrounder also thanked Delhi Capitals management for the opportunity and talked on the importance of maintaining a balance between batting and bowling as an all-rounder.

Myanmar-Thailand earthquake: Are quakes becoming too frequent?
Myanmar and Thailand on Friday has claimed more than a thousand lives so far. Myanmar’s Junta said on Saturday that at least 1,002 people had been killed and 2,376 others injured. The death toll and injuries are expected to rise. In Thailand, at least eight people died in the capital, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed. The devastation caused by the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake, shown in dozens of shocking videos and photos circulating on social media, has caused concerns in India too. India has recorded 159 earthquakes of varying magnitudes from November 2024 to February 2025, with the latest being a magnitude 4.0 in Delhi on February 17, as per a PIB press release. Many people have observed that earthquakes have been occurring more frequently in recent years. While it may seem like earthquakes are becoming more frequent, actual frequency of earthquakes may not have substantially increased. The feeling that earthquakes are becoming common could be due to more earthquakes being recorded and a heightened awareness of natural disasters due to social media. However, human activities like mining, dam building, and groundwater extraction can trigger earthquakes, leading to an increase in the number of human-induced earthquakes.

Disha Salian was depressed due to father's misuse of money, claims police closure report
Mumbai police's closure report in the Disha Salian death case had termed it a suicide and asserted she was battling depression due to various reasons, including misuse of her money by her father, an official has said. Disha Salian was a former manager of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 12th floor of her building in Jankalyan Nagar in north Mumbai's Malad area on June 8, 2020, as per police. The closure report by Malvani police, which probed the incident, was submitted to a superior officer (as per rules for an accidental death report) on February 4, 2021. The official on Friday said as part of the probe, Malvani police recorded statements of Disha's friends and some witnesses, during which it came to light that she was depressed due to some failed projects, misunderstanding with friends and misuse of her money by her father. The police had also recorded statements of actors with whom Disha Salian was communicating on behalf of her company, he added. After the case got entangled in an acrimonious tussle between political parties, the Mumbai police set up a Special Investigation Team, though its report is still awaited.

Everything you say to an Alexa speaker will be sent to Amazon
Amazon has disabled two key privacy features in its Alexa smart speakers, in a push to introduce artificial intelligence-powered «agentic capabilities» and turn a profit from the popular devices. Starting today (March 28), Alexa devices will send all audio recordings to the cloud for processing, and choosing not to save these recordings will disable personalisation features. How do voice assistants work? A voice assistant works by constantly listening for a «wake word», such as «Alexa». Once woken, it records the command that is spoken and matches it to an action, such as playing a music track. Matching a spoken command to an action requires what computer scientists call natural language understanding, which can take a lot of computer power.

60% wheat area sown under climate-resilient varieties: Govt in Rajya Sabha
Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Ramnath Thakur said, «The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through its All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on wheat has developed 114 varieties during the last 15 years which are suited to varying weather conditions. »...Out of total wheat area planted in the country during 2024-25, more than 60 per cent of wheat area is under climate resilient varieties. These climate-resilient varieties show less reduction in yield under stress environments," he added. The minister was replying to a question regarding the measures being taken to ensure that the wheat crop is not affected by rising temperatures in March. «The wheat varieties such as DBW187, DBW303, DBW327, WH1270, PBW872 have been developed and notified for the October planting and modifying planting schedules has allowed the grain filling to occur at comparatively lower temperatures and reduces the wheat exposure to heat stress, thereby resulting in higher yield,» Thakur said. In addition, ICAR- Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) Karnal is monitoring the weather situation and issuing advisories to farmers, allowing them to implement protective measures in case of rising temperature.
