Did he take a leaf out of Elon Musk's DOGE? Keir Starmer to slash 10,000 jobs at NHS England; here are the ones who will be impacted
Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed plans to slash 9,000 roles from the 15,000-strong NHS England workforce, targeting hundreds of millions in savings by merging duplicated functions like communications and strategy teams. The decision reverses a 2012 Coalition-era restructuring, drawing cautious support from figures like Jeremy Hunt, though critics warn of potential disruptions to patient care. Recent resignations of NHS England’s chief executive and medical director preceded the overhaul, signaling internal turmoil.

Kuki-Zo bodies plan vote on creation of a Union Territory
Kuki-Zo organisations in Manipur are planning a referendum on the political future of the Kuki-Zo people, calling for the creation of a Union Territory. The exercise, titled Kuki-Zo People's Referendum Ballot, will allow voters to express their opinion via a simple question: «Do you, as a Kuki-Zo person in Manipur, support the creation of a Union Territory for Kuki-Zo villages, governed directly by the Government of India?» Voters can choose Yes or No, and their details will be recorded as per the Indian Electoral Roll. The move echoes the 1951 Naga National Council plebiscite, which claimed 99.9% support for Naga independence. Meanwhile, normal life in Kuki-Zo areas of Manipur remains disrupted for the fifth day due to an indefinite shutdown called by the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC). The protest is against the resumption of bus services between Imphal and the hill districts and the recent police actions.

India, Mauritius ink pact during PM's visit to combat money laundering, corruption
money laundering, corruption, fraud, asset recovery and the financing of illicit activities, the ED said Thursday. The collaboration between Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) of Mauritius will «bolster» financial enforcement capabilities and will also contribute to broader economic and security cooperation between the two nations, the federal probe agency said in a statement. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged in the presence of Modi and Prime Minister of Mauritius Navinchandra Ramgoolam. During the discussions leading to the MoU, the ED and the FCC explored the possibilities of «joint operations» to detect, investigate and prosecute cross-border money laundering offences, according to the ED. They also underlined the significance of exchange programmes, experience sharing, training and skill building of the officers of both the organisations, it said. «Discussions were held on how ED can assist FCC by providing technological assistance and sharing of their digital forensic tools and best practices, towards ensuring better data seizing and extraction, and more productive data analysis,» the statement said.

ED detects 'unaccounted' cash deals worth Rs 1,000 crore in TASMAC operations in Tamil Nadu
Enforcement Directorate Thursday said it has found «multiple irregularities» in the operations of TASMAC that has monopoly over liquor trade in Tamil Nadu, including «manipulation» in the tender processes and «unaccounted» cash transactions worth Rs 1,000 crore through distillery companies. The federal agency claimed in a statement that it got «evidence» suggesting these corrupt practices after it raided the employees, corporate offices of distilleries and plants of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) on March 6. ED sources, on the day of the raids, had said the searches were also conducted against «key associates» linked to prohibition and excise department minister Senthil Balaji. The ED said it found «incriminating» data related to transfer postings, transport and bar licence tenders, indent orders «favouring» few distillery companies, excess charge of Rs 10-30 per bottle by TASMAC outlets, with the «involvement» of TASMAC officials, during the searches. It said this data shows «manipulation» in TASMAC's transport tender allocations where a «glaring» issue was the «mismatch» between the KYC details of the applicant and the demand draft (DD), suggesting that the final successful bidder did not even obtain the requisite DD before the application deadline. Tenders were awarded despite having only a single applicant in the final bid. TASMAC paid over Rs 100 crore annually to transporters, as per the ED.

RBI urges lenders to create common pool for green projects
green projects to boost flow of climate-related financing. The central bank has also proposed to set up a dedicated “on tap” cohort on climate change risks and sustainable finance under its Regulatory Sandbox initiative. Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday said that the lack of bankable green projects slowed the adequate flow of credit and a collaborative approach could address this constraint. «Capacity and expertise constraints limit the ability to appraise and thus finance climate change mitigation. It also enhances the risk of funding such projects. Thus, creation of a common pool of such bankable projects will have multi-fold benefits for the entire ecosystem,» Malhotra said at a seminar on climate change risks and finance organised by the central bank in New Delhi. He stressed upon capacity building and improving technical know-how to better appraise risks in financing projects which use green technologies.
