Oil: It’s Not Just US Output That’s Ramping — It’s Exports, Too
One of the most contentious debates you can have with an oil trader these days is about U.S. production. Many “long crude”, the market parlance for those betting on higher prices for a barrel, simply refuse to swallow the government line that output, which was virtually unchanged for over a year, had suddenly jumped a half million barrels per day in one week — and growing since.

Maharashtra: 73 farmers commit suicide in Chandrapur from Jan to July 2023
Maharashtra's Chandrapur district from January to July this year, including 13 last month, as per the district administration data. From 2001 to 2023, 1,148 farmers have ended their lives in the district, including 446 in the last five years, according to the data. A committee comprising the district collector, zilla parishad chief executive officer and superintendent of police had declared 745 farmers, who committed suicide between 2001 and 2022, as eligible for government compensation and 329 deceased cultivators as ineligible, as per the district administration. The district administration had sent a proposal to the government for providing compensation to the kin of the deceased farmers and 48 cases are pending from December 2022, the data said. «We are following guidelines updated in 2006 for providing the compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of farmers who commit suicide,» a senior official from the collectorate said. In case of suicide by farmers, the government provides compensation based on a fixed criteria. For reasons like crop loss, inability to repay loan from nationalised banks/co-operative banks or recognised moneylender, and failure to repay the loan, the kin of farmers will be eligible for a compensation of Rs 1 lakh, out of which Rs 30,000 will be handed over to them, while the remaining amount of Rs 70,000 will be deposited for five years into their accounts, as per the government resolution issued in 2006. A total of 54,514.65 hectares of crops belonging to 64,379 farmers in the district were damaged recently due to the flood in June-July this year, a senior official from the agriculture department said. He said a total of 852 villages were affected due to the flood in the district. Gondpipri

Charting the Global Economy: Export gloom deepens, Euro area activity retrenches
The contraction in euro area business activity deepened this month, most notably in Germany where the decline was the steepest since the pandemic brought the economy to a screeching halt in May 2020. France reported a third monthly drop in output, while the rest of the region contracted more moderately, according to a survey of purchasing managers. Sweden’s economic prospects dimmed, while a decline in UK retail sales underscored greater consumer caution. In Turkey, central bankers, including newly appointed officials led by Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan, surprised markets with the steepest interest-rate increase since 2018.

BRS to zero in on 'world's most expensive' LPG, steep fuel prices
Telangana Assembly elections, slated to be held in November-December this year. While the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is likely to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the high inflation rate, the 'world's costliest' LPG and steep hike in fuel prices, it may come under attack from the latter and also from the Congress over Telangana recording the highest inflation rate consistently among all states. The BJP is likely to hit back at BRS for not reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to pass on the benefits to the customers despite several states slashing VAT. The BJP leaders may also cite the fact that Telangana has been witnessing inflation ratethat is consistently the highest among the states. The Congress is likely to blame the policies of both the BJP and the BRS governments for the price rise. While attacking the BJP over the skyrocketing prices of fuel and LPG, its leaders may also slam the BRS for not reducing VAT on fuel and failing to check the high inflation. According to the Economic Survey 2022-23, Telangana logged the highest inflation rate in the country.

Workplace harassment: Confusion mounts as all kinds of cases get filed under PoSH
Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (PoSH) Act, said top law firms advising corporates on such cases and committee members. This is also contributing to a higher number of cases being lodged with internal committees of companies that are not prima facie cases of sexual harassment, the experts said. A lack of awareness on redressal mechanisms for general grievances in some companies, and a feeling among many employees that since PoSH is a women-centric and robust workplace law their cases will find a fair hearing and redressal if filed under it, is leading to internal committees and lawyers grappling with what falls under sexual harassment. This year, law firm Khaitan & Co saw a significant increase in the internal committees of several companies seeking legal advice for sexual harassment complaints. About 40-50% of these complaints may not come under the purview of sexual harassment in the absence of prima facie case of sexual harassment being made out, said Anshul Prakash, partner, employment labour and benefits at Khaitan & Co. «There is still confusion among some people — employees and internal committee members — about what comes under PoSH.

Brent oil prices in July were up 14 per cent on the previous month, the biggest monthly increase since January 2022. Prices in August are trending about 3 per cent lower on the previous month as China demand worries weigh. Number of micro irrigation schemes increased by 1.42 million between 2013-14 and 2017-18
micro irrigation schemes between 2013-14 and 2017-18, according to latest official census data released on Saturday. The sixth census of minor irrigation (MI) schemes showed that the number of both groundwater and surface water schemes have increased at the national level. Out of 23.14 million MI schemes examined, 21.93 million (94.8 per cent) constitute groundwater schemes, while 1.21 million (5.2 per cent) are classified as Surface Water Schemes. This underscores the substantial reliance on groundwater resources for irrigation needs. There has been a delay in release of the 6th census due to COVID-19 and work on the 7th census has already been started, a senior official said. The census data revealed that Uttar Pradesh claims the largest share of MI schemes, closely trailed by Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Defined as structures within either groundwater or surface water categories with a Culturable Command Area (CCA) up to 2,000 hectares, these minor irrigation schemes have surged by about 1.42 million, according to the latest census. The sixth census records a total of 23.1 million schemes compared to 21.7 million in the fifth census, signifying a 6.9 per cent increase in groundwater schemes and 1.2 per cent in surface water schemes at the national level. The census differentiates between groundwater and surface water categories, including dug wells, shallow, medium, and deep tube wells.
