Chan Sung Jung to record his 20th victory on Saturday in Singapore Indoor Stadium. He knocked out the Korean Zombie at the 23-second mark of the third round.
With this win, Max Holloway (24-7) became the first fighter in the featherweight division to have 20 wins, 11 finishes, and 9 knockouts in 26 fights.
After this defeat, Chan Sung Jung (17-8) announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. Declaring his intention he said, “I've always tried to become a champion since I first started in the sport. I'm not here to be ranked No. 3, 4 or 5. I tried my absolute best to train for Holloway and I ended up failing. I don't think I have the opportunity [to be champion anymore], so I'm going to stop fighting."
When Jung entered the ring, he was extremely aggressive, marched forward menacingly and flung punches wildly. Holloway waited for him calmly, evaded his wild power punches, and came back heavily. He gave an impressive performance from the beginning.
Holloway hurt Jung with a left hook in the first round and fell him on the ground in the second. He delivered a d'Arce choke and almost finished the fight after the knockdown. Max Holloway has now 18 wins in 21 fights at featherweight. He lost only three fights to current champion Alexander Volkanovski.
Jung became popular with his WEC debut in 2010 and became the Fight of the Year candidate with his fight against Leonard Garcia. He fought for the UFC championship twice, once against Jose Aldo in 2013 and then against Alexander Volkanovski in 2022. He lost four years of his career from 2013 to 2017 to complete South Korea’s mandatory military service.
