What does Kemi Badenoch replacing Rishi Sunak as new Conservative Party chief mean for India
Kemi Badenoch on Saturday became the first Black woman to lead Britain's Conservative Party as she succeeded Rishi Sunak in the House of Commons as the Leader of Opposition. The 44-year-old Nigerian-heritage parliamentarian defeated former Cabinet minister Robert Jenrick after a three-month-long leadership election following Sunak's resignation after the Tories suffered a bruising general election defeat on July 4. The shadow secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government began by thanking her predecessor – who was the first British Indian leader of the party. «I want to thank Rishi, no one could have worked harder in such difficult times. Rishi, thank you for everything you did. We all wish you and your wonderful family the very best for the future,» said Badenoch in her acceptance speech.

Spotlight on Indian visas in race to replace Rishi Sunak as UK Opposition Leader
Rishi Sunak as Conservative Party leader and take his place in the House of Commons as Leader of the Opposition have thrown the spotlight on cutting immigration into the UK, with visas for Indians being singled out in heated debates. Against the backdrop of the launch of the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham on Sunday, former immigration minister Robert Jenrick singled out India as one of the countries that should be subjected to tough visa restrictions across all categories unless it takes back its nationals who enter Britain illegally. His closest contender, shadow housing secretary Kemi Badenoch, has also zeroed in on the same issue and condemned new migrants bringing their disputes from India to cause unrest on the streets of the country. «It is quite clear that there are many people who have recently come to this country who have brought views from their countries of origin that have no place here,» Badenoch told the BBC.

UK visa ban for Indians? Top Tory contender Robert Jenrick says ‘no Indian visas without return agreement’
Robert Jenrick, one of the four remaining candidates to replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party, has vowed to «severely restrict visas» to countries that refuse to accept the return of illegal migrants, particularly targeting India and Vietnam. He claimed that while 250,000 visas were granted to Indian nationals in 2023 for work, visits, and study, an estimated 100,000 Indians currently reside illegally in the UK, and “returns remain stuck in the hundreds.”

UK may be planning to hike minimum-wage requirement for foreign workers
UK government may be planning to enforce a rule which would require foreign workers to be paid a salary exceeding £30,000 to come to Britain. The reform plans, currently under consideration, are expected to be officially outlined this week as part of the ongoing efforts to reduce net migration levels, according to a report in The Telegraph. Currently, workers outside shortage occupations require a minimum salary of £26,200 to take up jobs in the UK—a figure notably below the median wage of £33,000.
