Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Turkey may part ways with the European Union, implying that the country is thinking about ending its bid to join the 27-nation bloc. «The EU is making efforts to sever ties with Turkey,» he told reporters before departing for the 78th UN General Assembly in New York. «We will evaluate the situation, and if needed we will part ways with the EU.» He was responding to a question about a recent report adopted by the European Parliament, which stated «the accession process cannot resume under the current circumstances, and calls on EU to explore a parallel and realistic framework' for EU-Turkiye relations.» Turkey applied to join the European Union in 1999, and accession talks began in 2005.

Vladimir Putin said Monday that the grain deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain safely through the Black Sea won't be restored until the West meets its obligations to facilitate Russian agricultural exports. Putin made the statement after talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who along with the U.N. brokered the deal seen as vital for global food supplies, especially in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The Danube has become Ukraine's main route for exporting grain since July, when Russia quit a U.N. and Turkey-brokered deal that had given safe passage to Kyiv's exports of grains, oilseeds and vegetables oils via the Black Sea. Sunday's attack took place the day before Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan are due to hold talks in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi. Turkey has been pressing to revive the grain deal. Ukraine's South Military Command said on social media that at least two civilians were injured in the early morning attack on what it called «civil infrastructure of the Danube». The Ukrainian Air Force said air defence systems shot down 22 of the 25 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russia.

(Reuters) — The foreign ministers of Russia and Turkey spoke by telephone on Sunday, a day after Ankara angered Moscow by sending five Ukrainian commanders home with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in what Russia called a violation of a prisoner exchange agreement.

President Volodymyr Zelensky brought home from Turkey on Saturday five former commanders of Ukraine's garrison in Mariupol, a highly symbolic achievement that Russia said violated a prisoner exchange deal engineered last year. Russia immediately denounced the release. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ankara had promised under the exchange agreement to keep the men in Turkey and complained Moscow had not been informed.

Reuters reported. A spokesperson of the global human rights body also informed that it will likely conduct a debate on the issue of the rise of religious hatred later this week. The Koran burning incident in Sweden drew criticism from various quarters.

Turkey's president hinted on Saturday that he would seek office for the last time next year, saying it was time to hand the baton over to "young people".
