His views, often provocative, are now associated with the incoming US government's for him being a close aide of President-elect Donald Trump as well as holding influence on key policy issues. Trump has announced Musk will head DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) to cut government's wasteful spending. With an outsized influence on Trump, Musk's provocative posts on leaders of other countries are no longer being seen as views of a maverick businessman and innovator but of the incoming administration.

The march was not without opposition; a counter-demonstration led by Stand Up to Racism was held nearby, where supporters advocated for welcoming refugees and denounced Robinson’s influence. This juxtaposition of rallies highlighted the deep divisions within British society. The protests included a separate demonstration by families mourning loved ones lost in police custody, who stood in solidarity with anti-racism campaigners by holding signs denouncing hatred and fascism.

The UK’s image as a multicultural country is the obvious loser from the far-right violence of the past fortnight, but in time these tragic events may have wider implications for the policing of social media everywhere. The role of X in disseminating often-false information and lionizing rabble-rousers, as well as X owner Elon Musk’s provocative tweets and irresponsible retweets, are all under the microscope.

Robinson made a “comeback” post on X where he showcased a clip of the acclaimed song by actor and singer David Hasselhoff “Looking For Freedom,” and superimposed his face on Hasselhoff’s thus sending a cryptic message to his followers.
