U.S. pier project in Gaza is starting to get more aid to Palestinians in need but conditions are challenging, U.S. officials said Thursday. That reflects the larger problems bringing food and other supplies to starving people in the besieged territory. The floating pier had a troubled launch, with crowds overrunning some of the first trucks coming from the new U.S.-led sea route and taking its contents over the weekend. One man in the crowd was shot dead in still-unexplained circumstances. It led to a two-day suspension of aid distribution.

The United Kingdom’s global summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety, “AI Safety Summit” began on Nov. 1 and will carry on through Nov. 2 with government officials and leading AI companies from the world in attendance, including from the United States and China. 

Britain will convene governments, academia and companies working at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence on Wednesday at the inaugural AI Safety Summit to debate how, and even if, the risks of the technology can be contained. The meeting is the brainchild of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who wants to carve out a role for Britain as an intermediary between the economic blocs of the United States, China and the European Union.

Elon Musk is expected to attend a global summit on artificial intelligence in Britain this week, according to a government official. Britain is bringing together representatives of AI companies, political leaders and experts on Nov. 1-2 to discuss what some see as the risks posed by AI, with an aim of building an international consensus on its safe development.

Indonesia’s president has issued a stark warning after wrapping up a summit of Southeast Asian countries that was joined by China, the United States and Russia

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov joined the summit in the Indonesian capital led by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), along with leaders of other partner countries. Tensions have accompanied the talks on issues from trade and technology, to China's increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea, the Myanmar junta's refusal to cooperate with ASEAN on a peace plan, the war in Ukraine, and suspicion that North Korea plans to supply weapons to Russia. Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries have warned this week of «destructive» rivalries between major powers, a reference to U.S.-China tensions that they say puts them in danger. «We all have a responsibility to not create new conflict, new tension, new war and at the same time we also have a responsibility to reduce tensions,» Widodo, as chair of the 10-member ASEAN bloc this year, said at the beginning of the East Asia Summit. Cooperation and multilateralism risked being replaced by «the rule of the strong». «The world will be destroyed if conflicts and tensions in one place are taken to another place,» he said in closing the summit. On Wednesday, China's Li warned against starting a «new Cold War» and warned countries against taking sides in any conflict. Li Qiang said on Wednesday it is important to avoid a «new Cold War» when dealing with conflicts between countries as world leaders gathered in Indonesia amid sharpening geopolitical rivalries across the Indo-Pacific region. Speaking at an annual summit involving members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and South Korea, Li said countries needed to «appropriately handle differences and disputes». «At present, it is very important to oppose taking sides, bloc confrontation and a new Cold War,» Li told the meeting.
