EU calls for 'corridors and pauses' for Gaza aid
Hamas to get aid into Gaza, after hours of negotiations at a summit of the bloc in Brussels. The European Union has struggled for both unity and influence in the face of the crisis that has engulfed the Middle East since Hamas launched its bloody attack on Israel on October 7. The surge in bloodshed has divided Europe's attention at a time of rising doubts about the West's ability to keep supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. After five hours of talks, the leaders called for «continued, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access and aid to reach those in need through all necessary measures including humanitarian corridors and pauses for humanitarian needs». They said the EU «will work closely with partners in the region to protect civilians, provide assistance and facilitate access to food, water, medical care, fuel and shelter». European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insisted early on Friday there was «no contradiction between showing solidarity to Israel and, of course, acting on the need of humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza» after the leaders' talks ended. The 27-nation bloc has long been split between more pro-Palestinian members such as Ireland and Spain, and staunch backers of Israel including Germany and Austria. There has been strong condemnation of the Hamas attack, which Israel says killed at least 1,400 people and resulted in more than 220 people being taken hostage. But there was less consensus on urging any halt to Israel's retaliatory bombardment of Gaza, which the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed more than 7,000 people. The EU's call fell short of the demands from the United Nations for a «ceasefire», despite a last-ditch push from Spain to toughen the

Biden links India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor to Israel-Hamas war, says 'I'm convinced...'
Israel-Hamas war news: As Israel invaded Gaza on the ground on Thursday, targeting Hamas positions using tanks, United States President Joe Biden hinted that hinted that one of the reasons behind Hamas fighters' 7 October attack on Israel was the recent announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. According to a GTRI report, the ongoing Israel's war with Hamas fighters in Gaza can derail the prospect of a historic peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia, a crucial linchpin in the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) framework The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor was announced by US President Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the annual Group of 20 summit held in India earlier this year.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell calls Israel's evacuation plan 'utterly impossible'
Josep Borrell said Saturday that a plan by Israel to evacuate more than one million people out of northern Gaza in a single day was «utterly impossible to implement». Israel warned residents in the area to evacuate before an expected ground offensive against Palestinian Islamist organisation Hamas in retaliation for the deadliest attack in Israel's history. «I am saying that, representing the official position of the European Union… (the evacuation plan) is utterly, utterly impossible to implement,» Borrell told a press conference in Beijing on the final day of a three-day diplomatic visit to China. «To imagine that you could move one million people in 24 hours in a situation like Gaza can only be a humanitarian crisis,» he added. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen had expressed support to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday during a visit to the country. «Europe stands with Israel,» said von der Leyen, adding that the country had «a duty to defend its citizens». But Borrell's comments in Beijing showed the limits of that affirmation, saying that Israel was also obligated to follow international humanitarian law in the process of defending itself. «The position is clear,» said Borrell. «We certainly defend the right of Israel to defend itself.» «But, as any right, it has a limit.
