NATO in talks to put nuclear weapons on standby, chief Jens Stoltenberg tells UK's Telegraph newspaper
NATO is in talks to deploy more nuclear weapons, taking them out of storage and placing them on standby, in the face of a growing threat from Russia and China, the head of the alliance said on Monday. Jens Stoltenberg told Britain's Telegraph newspaper that there were live consultations between members to use transparency around its nuclear arsenal as a deterrent. «I won't go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which should be stored, but we need to consult on these issues. That's exactly what we're doing,» he told the paper.

World War 3? This pertinent question is looming large in the background with the US test-firing its hypersonic nuclear missile, which can hit any target in the Russian capital of Moscow in 30 minutes. Putin’s existential problem: Not enough Russians
Vladimir Putin has portrayed himself as a defender of global stability, leading a powerful nation that offers a robust economic, military and cultural alternative to the West. One challenge to his vision: Russia’s population has been in decline for years, and the war in Ukraine has made matters worse. At least 150,000 Russians are dead on the battlefield, according to Western estimates.

AI and the art of war in Ukraine
Kharkiv, Ukraine This wasn’t the easiest time to visit Ukraine’s second-largest city. The local power grid and infrastructure were taking serious hits as missiles and glide bombs struck the city from nearby Russian territory. “Double tap" attacks, by which Russians strike a civilian target and wait for first responders to rush to the scene before launching a second strike, were becoming more common.

Ukraine secures more military aid from EU members
Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a second $1-billion promise of military aid in as many days on Tuesday during a whirlwind tour of three European Union countries, even as President Vladimir Putin warned that hitting Russian soil with Western-supplied weapons could set the war on a dangerous new path. The aid pledge for 2024 came from Belgium, which topped up the money with a commitment to give Ukraine 30 F-16 fighter jets in the next four years. «Our task is to use the first F-16 on the battlefield this year and in such way that it will fortify our positions,» Zelenskyy said.

Xi Jinping exposes cracks in China's governance model
Hong Kong: During President Vladimir Putin's visit to China in mid-May, he said Russia and China are «jointly committed to promoting the establishment of a more democratic multipolar world order». To countries that do consider themselves democratic, Putin's notion was laughable, for both China and Russia are ruled tightly by autocratic rulers who have no intention of losing their grip on power. In fact, Professor Steve Tsang, Director of the SOAS China Institute at SOAS University of London, told ANI, «The biggest challenge China faces in governance terms is the concentration of power in Xi's hands.»
