Putin to visit UAE, Saudi Arabia this week: Russian news outlet
Vladimir Putin will visit the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia this week, Russian news outlet Shot reported on Monday, citing Putin's aide Yury Ushakov. The reported visit comes after the OPEC+ group of oil producers, which includes all three countries, agreed last Thursday to voluntary output cuts totalling about 2.2 million barrels a day. Markets reacted with scepticism to the deal because of doubts about whether the voluntary cuts would be fully implemented. Oil prices fell 2% last week after the announcement, and declined further on Monday. Putin has rarely travelled abroad in recent years, and mostly to states of the former Soviet Union.

Putin turns muse! Russian President honoured in Andy Warhol-inspired fashion show
fashion show this week honouring long-time leader President Vladimir Putin by embellishing his face on Andy Warhol-inspired sweaters, in what one nationalist news outlet called an «unusual» display. Since Russia launched full-scale hostilities against Ukraine last year, Putin's cult of personality has burst into the mainstream, with officials effusively heaping praise on the president. The fashion show, held late on Thursday, took place in Putin's native Saint Petersburg and showcased art by Alexey Sergienko, a self-proclaimed patriot whose collection of paintings 'The President is a Kindhearted Man' formed the basis for the designs. «I was impressed when he was re-elected,» Sergienko told AFP, standing in front of his piece «Putin, Star, Crown» — a kaleidoscopic grid of Putin's interspaced with stars and crowns. «The crown is a reference to the past, and it's also an allusion to the fact that I knew that the president would be elected again and again,» he said. «I painted this picture saying that we shall have Putin for a long time, forever,» he told AFP. Many of his works are reminiscent of American artist Andy Warhol, whose vibrant paintings of celebrities and everyday objects popularised the «pop art» movement of the late 1950s to 1960s. The event, which the ultra-nationalist television channel Tsargrad described in a report as «unusual», featured a catwalk of models wearing a range of Putin-themed jackets, t-shirts and neck-scarves. «We came to the show as a whole family,» 48-year-old visitor Andrey Nechaev told AFP. «We are very happy to be here,» he added. The Kremlin's desire to galvanise support for Putin and the conflict in Ukraine has touched on almost every aspect of life, including music and the

'You'll die in this pit': Takeaways from secret recordings of Russian soldiers in Ukraine
As the war in Ukraine grinds into its second winter, a growing number of Russian soldiers want out, audio intercepts obtained and verified by The Associated Press indicate. Russian soldiers speak in shorthand of 200s to mean dead, 300s to mean wounded. The urge to flee has become common enough that they also talk of 500s — people who refuse to fight. These conversations also show clearly how the war has progressed, from the professional soldiers who initially powered Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion to men from all walks of life compelled to serve in grueling conditions. The verified the identities of people in the calls by speaking with relatives and soldiers — some of whom are still at war in Ukraine — and researching open-source material linked to the phone numbers used by the soldiers.

France test-fires long-range ballistic missile in bid to boost nuclear deterrence
France has successfully test-fired an M51.3 long-range ballistic missile, boosting the credibility of France's nuclear deterrence capabilities, the defence ministry said on Sunday. The missile, which did not carry a nuclear weapon, was fired from the French army's Biscarosse missile testing site in southwest France and landed in the North Atlantic, «hundreds of kilometres from any coastline» the ministry said, without giving further detail. «The flight has allowed to confirm a major improvement of the missile which will contribute to the lasting credibility of France's oceanic deterrence in coming decades,» the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. It added that maintaining operational credibility of France's nuclear weapons is required given the international environment. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned the West that he would be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia. The M51.3 missile is an upgraded version of the M51, a three-stage sea-land strategic ballistic missile designed to be launched from French Navy submarines. The M51 was first test-fired from a ground base in 2006 and from a submarine in 2010, the year it was commissioned. The new M51.3 missile, which is expected to enter service around 2025, is developed by aerospace firm ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and French defence group Safran . Ballistic missiles are similar to rockets and follow elliptic trajectories after launch, often leaving the earth's atmosphere to reach lower space, unlike cruise missiles, which typically follow straight trajectories at low altitude, powered by continuous thrust until they reach their target.
