Waves Twitter MET Remark Death President Celebrity Time Iran warns 'time running out' for political solution in Gaza war
Iran on Monday said time was running short to reach a political solution in the Israel-Gaza conflict, warning of the «possibility of expanding the scope of war and conflict to other fronts». Israel declared war on the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas a day after waves of its fighters broke through Gaza's heavily militarised border with Israel on October 7 and shot, stabbed and burned to death over 1,400 people, most of them civilians. Israel has responded by pummelling the Gaza Strip with non-stop air and artillery strikes that have flattened neighbourhoods and killed at least 2,750 people in Gaza, mostly civilians. Iran celebrated the Hamas assault but insisted it was not involved. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday held phone calls with his Russian and Turkish counterparts, during which he «warned against the continuation of crimes by the Zionist regime», the president's political deputy, Mohammad Jamshidi, said on X, formerly Twitter. During his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Raisi warned of a «possibility of expanding the scope of war and conflict to other fronts». «If this happens, it will be more difficult to control the situation,» Raisi said, according to state news agency IRNA. Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian meanwhile «stressed that time is running out for political solutions» to the conflict, according to a post on X. He added that he told his counterparts in Malaysia, Pakistan and Tunisia that the «probable spread of war to other fronts is approaching an inevitable stage». His remarks come as Israel readies for a land invasion into the long-blockaded Gaza Strip, where fears for Palestinians trapped in the heavily-bombarded enclave have grown since Israel

Twitter Platform President country social reports gatherings Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov in China ahead of Putin visit
Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov arrived in Beijing on Monday ahead of an expected visit by President Vladimir Putin to China, for a gathering of representatives of 130 countries that will be overshadowed by the Israel-Gaza war. This will be Putin's first trip to a major global power since the Ukraine invasion. The foreign ministry announced on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that Lavrov was in the Chinese capital as part of a Russian delegation. Beijing is hosting representatives of 130 countries Tuesday to Wednesday to mark a decade of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) — a key geopolitical project of President Xi Jinping to extend China's global reach. But all eyes will be on Putin, who last month told Beijing's Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Saint Petersburg he had «gladly accepted» Xi's invitation to visit China for the BRI talking shop. The Russian leader's strategic dependence on China has only grown since his invasion of neighbouring Ukraine thrust his country into international isolation. Putin last week voiced concern at the «catastrophic increase» in the number of civilian victims in Israel and the Gaza Strip. The Kremlin ambassador to the United Nations has called for a «humanitarian cease-fire» in the Gaza Strip and Israel, while blaming the United States for the ongoing conflict. This year, trade between China and Russia has soared to levels not seen since the beginning of Moscow's war in Ukraine, with Chinese imports of Russian oil offering Moscow a critical lifeline as international sanctions bite. China has refused to condemn the war in an effort to position itself as a neutral party, while at the same time offering Moscow vital diplomatic and financial support. At the heart of the

President country travelers strain Vladimir Putin to travel to Kyrgyzstan in first known trip abroad since ICC arrest warrant
Vladimir Putin will visit Kyrgyzstan on Thursday, the presidential office of the Central Asian country said, in what would be the Russian leader's first known trip abroad since the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest. Putin has rarely travelled abroad since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 and is not known to have left Russia since the ICC issued in March a warrant for him on suspicion of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin denies those allegations. «At the invitation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, on October 12 of this year, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, will make an official visit to the country,» the Kyrgyz presidential administration said in a statement on its website. Putin agreed in May during talks with Japarov to visit Kyrgyzstan, but there has been no official confirmation yet from the Kremlin that the Russian president will travel there on Thursday. The Russian leader is also due to travel to China next week for the third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.

Lowe's Target Reuters economy President exclusive reports 2024 IMF lowers Russia 2024 GDP growth forecast to 1.1%
Russia's economy will grow by 1.1% in 2024, slower than previously forecast, the International Monetary Fund said, after significant spending and resilient consumption in a stretched labour market support growth of 2.2% this year. Moscow plans to allocate almost a third of increased budget spending next year to defence as it diverts more resources towards its invasion of Ukraine. Reuters reported exclusively in August that Russia had doubled its 2023 defence spending target. «The rise in growth reflects a substantial fiscal stimulus, strong investment, and resilient consumption in the context of a tight labour market,» the IMF said on Tuesday in its World Economic Outlook, in reference to this year's forecast. Russia's economy ministry expects gross domestic product (GDP) to expand 2.8% this year, bouncing back from a 2.1% decline in 2022.
