SC rejects Adani firm's plea for over Rs 1300 crore as late payment surcharge from Rajasthan state discom
Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea of Adani Power Rajasthan Ltd seeking over Rs 1,300 crore as late payment surcharge from the Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, a Rajasthan government-owned power distribution firm. Imposing Rs 50,000 as cost on Adani Power Rajasthan Ltd (APRL), a bench comprising Justices Aniruddha Bose and PV Sanjay Kumar ruled that filing of a miscellaneous application was not the proper legal recourse to late payment surcharge (LPS) by the Adani firm. «Relief of this nature (claiming LPS) cannot be asked in a miscellaneous application which was described in the course of the hearing as an application for clarification,» the bench said. The cost of Rs 50,000 imposed on APRL will be deposited with the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee, Justice Bose said while reading out the operative portion of the judgement.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: BJP aims for clean sweep in Rajasthan as Congress seeks a reversal of fortunes
Lok Sabha polls in Rajasthan. Despite losing the state assembly elections to the Congress in December 2018 and being in the opposition, the BJP managed to secure 24 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, with the remaining seat going to its ally, the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP). Now in power in Rajasthan, the BJP is looking to maintain its momentum. Congress' Hopes Amidst Past Losses The Congress, which secured a majority of assembly seats in eastern Rajasthan in the 2018 polls, faced a setback in the subsequent parliamentary elections. The Gurjar community, particularly influential in the region, had supported the Congress in the assembly polls, expecting Sachin Pilot, a Gurjar leader, to become the state's chief minister. However, when this did not materialize, the Congress saw a decline in support, leading to the BJP's dominance in the Lok Sabha polls.

Shakeout in Indian small-caps seen luring dip buyers to market
investors despite the securities regulator’s warnings of a potential bubble. Perceived as key beneficiaries of the South Asian nation’s 8%-plus economic growth, shares of smaller firms are seen staging a comeback after a selloff that’s pushed down the Nifty Smallcap 250 Index almost 10% since Feb. 27. That was the day the Securities and Exchange Board of India directed mutual funds to take steps to shield investors from the speculative froth in small- and mid-cap stocks.
