Unsatisfied with the Ministry of Mines’ response that no capping is warranted on production of iron ore in Odisha, the Supreme Court on Monday sought the independent view of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) on the impact of mining on the environment and the concept of intergenerational equity, the issues not looked at by the former. The Ministry of Mines told the SC that steel being an important pillar in achieving the economic goals of the nation and in making India self-reliant, any such capping would be highly detrimental towards achieving the common developmental goals of the nation. «Putting a cap on production of a mineral in a particular state, which is resource rich in that commodity, will jeopardise the economic development of the nation, mineral availability for the downstream industries and the requirement to sub-serve the huge population base of the country,” it said. A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud sought to know if the MoEF was consulted by the Ministry of Mines on the issue.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Rameswar, minister of state in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, apprised that there are 9.67 crore active LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which includes 69.26 lakh connections in Rajasthan as of October 2023. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was started in May 2016 to provide clean cooking fuel to poor households across the country. Under PMUY, a deposit-free LPG connection is provided to adult women from poor households. «The government started a targeted subsidy of Rs 200/- per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year (and proportionately pro-rated for 5 Kg connections) to the PMUY consumers in May 2022.

Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on Monday set aside the penalty imposed by Sebi on Reliance Industries Ltd's Chairman Mukesh Ambani and two other entities in a case related to alleged manipulative trading in the shares of erstwhile Reliance Petroleum Ltd (RPL) back in November 2007. The ruling has come after all the entities appealed before the tribunal against the order passed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in January 2021. In January 2021, Sebi imposed a Rs 25 crore fine on Reliance Industries Ltd(RIL), Rs 15 crore on Ambani, who is the company's Chairman and Managing Director, Rs 20 crore on Navi Mumbai SEZ Pvt Ltd and Rs 10 crore on Mumbai SEZ Ltd in RPL case.

Meanwhile, the court also ordered to supply an advance copy of the supplementary chargesheet to Sanjay Singh's lawyer and noted that the bail arguments are to be held on December 6, 2023. Earlier during the arguments, the Enforcement Directorate filed an application stating that the names of one protected witness had been mentioned by mistake and hence the same shall not come into the public domain due to their protection. The court has reserved the order for the interim court and directed the court staff to keep the file in secrecy. However, the court, while ordering to serve the advance copy to Sanjay Singh's lawyer, allowed ED to remove or hide such a portion mentioning the protected witness name.
