US trade deficit in August to the smallest since late 2020, according to government data released on Thursday. The trade gap shrank to $58.3 billion, down nearly 10 percent from July's revised figure of $64.7 billion, said the Commerce Department. Analysts had expected a smaller change in deficit and the latest numbers showed exports rose $4.1 billion to $256 billion in August. Imports slipped by $2.3 billion from July to $314.3 billion. While consumer spending has helped to boost US trade, analysts have warned that this could weaken following steep interest rate hikes by the central bank over the past year — aimed at lowering inflation and cooling demand. «Trade flows have slowed overall,» economist Rubeela Farooqi of High Frequency Economics told AFP. «But quarter-to-date, exports are up and imports are down, suggesting some softening in domestic demand,» she added. The labor market remains strong and households are still spending.

Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) on Thursday reported a total default on payments of loans' principal and interest amount of Rs 433.91 crore for the September 2023 quarter. This is lower than the June quarter when CDEL had reported a total default of Rs 440.25 crore. Its «total financial indebtedness of listed entity, including short term and long term debt», is Rs 433.91 crore in the July-September quarter, the company said in a disclosure to bourses on Thursday.

Kerala court on Thursday sentenced a man to a cumulative prison term of 80 years for raping and impregnating the 14-year-old cousin of his wife in this hill district in 2020. Sharing details of the court order, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Shijo Mon Joseph said the convict will only serve 20 years — the highest of the varying jail terms — as the sentences will run concurrently. Idukki Fast Track Court judge T G Varghese handed the man varying jail sentences for various offences, including penetrative sexual assault and aggravated penetrative sexual assault, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on the convict.

State Bank of India (SBI), has been extended till August 2024, news agency Reuters reported on October 5, citing government sources who are privy to the development. Typhoon Koinu's storm encircled Taiwan between 6 am Wednesday (October 4) and 6 am Thursday (October 5), its defence ministry (MND) tracked one Chinese military aircraft and three navy vessels across the nation, Taiwan News reported.
