India's Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, revealed a series of significant announcements that aim to bolster the nation's self-reliance in the defence sector. The primary focus of these announcements was the unveiling of the fifth Positive Indigenisation List, which contains 98 critical items essential for the country's security and sovereignty.
Strengthening Self-Reliance with the Fifth Positive Indigenisation List
The highlight of the 'Swavlamban 2.0' event was the release of the fifth Positive Indigenisation List by the Department of Military Affairs (DMA).
This list comprises 98 items, including highly complex systems, sensors, weapons, and ammunition. What makes this list noteworthy is its commitment to procuring these items from indigenous sources, adhering to the provisions outlined in the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, and following a carefully phased timeline.
Focus on Import Substitution and Domestic Development
The fifth Positive Indigenisation List focuses primarily on import substitution for various components, major systems, platforms, weapon systems, sensors, and munitions.
Notable inclusions in this list are Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles, Unmanned Aerial Systems, and more, all intended to be developed domestically. This approach ensures that India's defence sector reduces its reliance on foreign imports, thus fostering 'Aatmanirbharta' or self-reliance.
Challenges Launched to Foster Innovation
In addition to the Positive Indigenisation List, Minister Rajnath Singh launched 76 challenges as part of the 10th Defence India Start-up Challenges (DISC 10) and DISC 10 PRIME of Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX).
