'Misleading reports': MEA dismisses CNN allegations of India's involvement in Bangladesh Floods
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India refuted allegations from a CNN report that suggested India's involvement in the recent flood situation in Bangladesh. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized the report, calling its narrative «misleading» and «factually not correct.» The MEA maintained that excessive rainfall, rather than any actions taken by India, was responsible for the flooding. «We have seen the CNN report on the flood situation in Bangladesh. Its narrative is misleading and suggests that India is somehow responsible for the floods. This is factually not correct and ignores the facts mentioned in the press releases issued by the Government of India clarifying the situation,» Jaiswal said. Jaiswal also criticized the CNN report for ignoring the existing communication between India and Bangladesh regarding water resources management.

Sebi cancels registration of 39 stock brokers, 7 commodity brokers
Sebi on Friday cancelled the registration of 39 stock brokers and seven commodity brokers after they failed to meet the registration requirements. Additionally, the regulator cancelled the registration of 22 depository participants who are no longer affiliated to any depository. The main reason for cancelling the registration certificate of these entities, is to prevent them from misusing their Sebi registration without being an active participant of a depository or a member of a recognized stock exchange, thereby protecting unaware investors, the regulator said in three separate orders.

Rains, cyclone threaten Gujarat's cotton and peanut crops ahead of harvest
heavy rains and strong winds this week, raising the risk of floods and threatening the crops that are just weeks away from harvesting. Saurashtra and Kachchh regions of the western state of Gujarat will receive heavy precipitation for three days through Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department. A deep depression in the coastal parts may intensify into a cyclone on Friday, causing the wind speed to surge to as high as 85 kilometers (53 miles) per hour, it said in a bulletin Thursday. Any severe damage to cotton plants could put pressure on the South Asian nation to increase overseas purchases, potentially underpinning global prices of cotton that have slumped almost 15% this year. A likely drop in production of peanuts could tighten supplies of the commodity in the country that imports about 60% of its vegetable oil needs.

DoT drops penalty clause; exempts demonstration, testing by central govt from new interception rule
Department of Telecom has dropped the penalty clause on telecom entities for violation of interception norms under the new rules notified recently. The Telecommunications (Procedures and Safeguards for Lawful Interception of Messages) Rules, 2024, notified on Wednesday, will not be applicable to demonstrations and testing of interception systems by the central government. Under the new interception rules, the DoT has removed provisions related to fines and suspension of telecom licences for violation of licence conditions pertaining to maintenance of secrecy, confidentiality of information and unauthorised interception of communications. The new rules, however, mandate telecom entities involved in the process of interception to ensure that «adequate and effective internal safeguards are implemented to prevent any unauthorised interception of messages» and «confidentiality and secrecy is maintained in the matter of interception of messages».
