markets Aware Action economy Sustainability country rights Let the noise die down and then look for good businesses with reasonable balance sheets: Sachin Shah
Sachin Shah, Executive Director & Fund Manager, Emkay Investment Managers, says private sector banks are favoured due to reasonable valuations, eased liquidity from RBI actions, and a rebound in the rural market economy. Domestic focused businesses and export-oriented industries with strong value propositions also present advantages as India benefits from lower tariffs in global markets. Identifying strong businesses with solid balance sheets will be crucial. What should one do? How should one gauge an event like Trump-led reciprocal tariff and prepare for it? We were preparing, for the last two months we knew we were going to get a reciprocal tariff, April 2nd was the date that we all were watching out for, April 3rd for India. Despite all that, this tariff has hit us hard. It was much more than we expected. Sachin Shah: Yes, you are right, this is an event which we have been discussing for a while now and now it has happened. But we also have to become aware of the fact that this is sustainable, something we need to really think through because this is definitely going to impact the US economy the most and this is also reflected in the US capital markets clearly for the last few weeks and more so in the last couple of days. This is going to be very, very inflationary for the economy and clearly at this point in time, it looks like it may not be very sustainable.

UPS Action community President country International Sacked envoy Phil Goff defends questioning Donald Trump's historical understanding
Phil Goff, New Zealand's former High Commissioner to the UK, sacked for publicly questioning US President Donald Trump's understanding of history, has defended his comments. Goff stated his comments were prompted by the US President's «disgraceful bullying» of Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky, and the «untruthful statements» made by the Trump administration about Russia’s invasion. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters moved quickly to dismiss Goff, stating his position had become “untenable.” Goff, however, maintains he has no regrets and believes his actions will be viewed favorably in the future. Goff made the first comments about Trump during a live-streamed Q&A event with Finland Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on March 4. Referring to Winston Churchill’s 1938 speech to the House of Commons following the Munich Agreement, asking Valtonen, “President Trump has restored the bust of Churchill to the Oval Office. But do you think he really understands history?” This question, according to Goff, arose from the “dismay” shared within the diplomatic community in London regarding Trump's stance on Ukraine. “As one untruthful statement followed another like something out of an Orwell novel, I increasingly felt that the lies needed to be called out," he had said.

We are conducting this evaluation in response to a March 26, 2025, letter I received from the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, requesting that I conduct an inquiry into recent public reporting on the Secretary of Defense's use of an unclassified commercially available messaging application to discuss information pertaining to military actions in Yemen in March 2025,» the letter stated. markets Extreme Action War country dance International Trump's tariff tactics: Will India dance or dodge the economic drama?
Trump claims to have fixed tariffs at half the level of those imposed by other countries. Hardly any country has only one tariff on everything. So, presumably, he — or his arithmetically-educated advisers — would have to calculate an average of country tariffs. A simple average would make no sense. Although the assumption that he distinguishes between sense and nonsense would be too strong. So, the average would have had to be weighted by the relative importance of the imported goods. We have no idea how the weights were calculated. USTR has given the formula used to calculate the tariff. But it has a symbol — ε (epsilon) — in it that makes all the difference. It has neither given the symbol’s value, nor how it was calculated. All that Trump has told us is that his closeness to the leader of the exporting country made no difference to the tariff. In other words, the rate of return on our PM’s conviviality has been zero. Should we worry about Trump’s abrupt, startling aggression? The US is our biggest customer among all countries. In 2023-24, it took 17.4% of our exports. Optimists may say that it’s wrong to take physical exports. Our biggest exports to the US have been intellectual services. But that only adds to America’s importance.

Manufacturing Action Trade President country India to follow wait and watch approach on US tariffs; not to act in hurry: Sources
import duties by the US on the global trade and not take any action in a hurry as America may itself face problems from its domestic industry, government sources said. US President Donald Trump on April 2 announced reciprocal tariffs ranging 11-49 per cent on about 60 countries, including India and China. It will come into effect from April 9. The official said there are both challenges and opportunities for India as many of its competitor countries in exports, such as China Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Thailand, face higher duties. «As a country we need to watch the situation and need not be in a hurry. This is something new that has happened. It is unprecedented. The US industry too would be angry from this move and challenges will also be there. We need to wait, observe, and and see because we should not rush to conclusion that this is it for the future. We need to see what is there in store on their side,» one of the sources said. The duties announced by the US are aimed at cutting down its trade deficit and boost manufacturing. On the 27 per cent duty on India, they added that only 6-7 sectors like shrimp and carpet could face challenges from the steep taxes, but majority of other sectors like pharma and electronics would get opportunities to increase shipments as competitor nations would face higher duties than India.

In comments outside the White House, Trump singled out Australian beef, which saw a surge in exports to the United States last year, reaching A$4 billion amid a slump in U.S. beef production. «They won't take any of our beef. They don't want it because they don't want it to affect their farmers and you know, I don't blame them but we're doing the same thing right now,» Trump said in an event in the White House Rose Garden announcing tariffs on a wide range of U.S. trading partners. Australia banned U.S. fresh beef products in 2003 due to the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, otherwise known as mad cow disease, in U.S. cattle. BSE poses a risk to human health and has never been detected in cattle in Australia. Albanese said Trump had imposed a 10% duty on all Australian goods entering the United States, equivalent to the U.S. baseline tariff on all imports, despite U.S. goods entering Australia tariff free.
